Car rental advice for Umbria

I'll be heading to Todi for 10 days in September. I've been before but didn't need to think about car rental then.

I'll be arriving from Canada on a Saturday morning (Sept 27th) and need to get to Todi. We'll be in a villa just outside of Todi for the week and then will spend time in Rome before leaving on Monday, October 6th - probably 2 nights in Rome.

Thoughts - didn't want to immediately rent a car from FCO and drive directly to Todi - thinking I'll be too tired and also don't want to drive back into Rome before leaving.

Would you recommend train to Terni and then rent car from here or train to Orvieto and rent car - or is there a better option that someone has done? What's the easier drive? On the map it looks easier to drive Orvieto to Todi?

My ideal preference would be to find a train station that has a car rental inside the station or across the street that is then a reasonably easy drive into Todi.

Thanks everyone!

I'd pick up the car at the airport and go from there. You have easy access to the autostrada. I did this and drove to Passignano on Lake Trasimeno. I had a navigator and we had a good map and directions. I think the drive was around 2 hours. I'm not sure how far Todi.

I would not recommend picking up a car at the train station and driving in Rome.

Then return the car to the airport, and take the train or a shuttle to the central train station or your hotel. Or, drop the car in a nearby town, like Orvieto, and take the train from there.

Have fun in Umbria!

If you want to pick the car up in Orvieto the train station is about 150 yards from the Hertz office. We used AutoEurope but the car was from Hertz and we used Orvieto as our drop off point. Makes it pretty easy.
Todi is great; we spent 4 days there last year. We were there once before for 1 day and liked it so much we returned.

We rented at FCO and drove to our villa near Orvieto the same day, then dropped the car off in Orvieto before taking the train to Rome/Naples - I would NOT drive a rental car back to and into Rome.

IMHO, I think the direct drive from FCO to Todi is easier than the alternative of taking the train from FCO to Rome Termini and then a train to Orvieto or Terni and then renting a car to drive to Todi. I think if you're that concerned about being tired you would REALLY be tired after 2 extra train trips.

Thanks for your replies - think I have my answer anyway, the car rental places in Orvieto and Terni close at 1pm on Saturday so wouldn't be able to make it there in time. I'll be renting from FCO and driving to Todi. From the map it looks like a simple drive from FCO to the ring road and then look for signs to the A1 north - hopefully not too crazy a drive.

We have driven from FCO to Todi a couple of times. Very easy drive. On one of our trips we stopped in Orvieto for lunch.

You are going to have a fabulous time! We have had several meals at Pane e Vino in Todi - delightful!!
