Any recommendations for a cheap local car rental - we are going to be driving from Lisbon down to the Algarve and back within 9 nine days.. Thanks!

I would also be interested in hearing suggestions for the rental of a car at the Lisbon Airport for one week in July! Should I reserve it in advance or bargain for the best offer at the counter, after arriving?

The local car rental agency in Portugal and Spain that seems to be consistently cheaper is called Sixt. You might give them a try; usually you don't have to reserve ahead, but in vacation months it would be a good idea.

Sixt is actually an international company. Many of the car hire companies are doing really competitive rates for the summer- book in advance though as many car hire firms have decreased fleet numbers after Sept 11.

Check also www.holidayautos.com! They appear to offer very good rates!

Check out AutoEurope (1-800-223-555). They will match anyone's prices, and I've had great service from them for the past 10 years.

Thanks Miguel for your advice regarding specialrates.com, they did indeed have a good deal for us - I have made a reservation and will let everyone know how it worked out when I return from Portugal..
