Hi d,
>We're going to pick up from Rome and drop off in paris. Any suggestions? <
Be prepared for a very large drop-off fee.
If you can arrange it, drive to a town near the border and turn in the car in Italy.
Train to the frst town in France and pick up your car there.

If you're going to have the car long enough to do the lease/buy-back thing, the surcharge for delivery to Rome (airport) is less ($190 for Peugeot) than most rental drop-off fees between Italy and France.
