Car Rental - Sicily

I am wrapping up our bookings for Sicily next May. We start at Catania airport May 27 & plan to drop the car June 6 in Palermo.

Other than the usual suspects, has anyone had success (or failure) with any other rental agencies in Sicily. AutoEurope & Avis have similar rates for our needs. Manual Alfa 159 or similar - although if I could get a reasonable convertible I would be sorely tempted.

Terrific---Sicily in May.
We did a similar sojourn in May 2005 and loved it. Got the car in Taormina using Autoeurope and dropped in Palermo on Franciso Crespi---not a bad deal. Here is your sneak preview---I loved the spring flowers.

Bob

I read your report & saw the pics when you posted them. That plus other reports convinced me that Sicily was a worthwhile destination. The Power of the Trip Report!

I have it all planned & we should see a nice swath of Sicily. We start in Taormina & head south - Siracusa & then west - Modica, a farm near Menfi & finish with several days in Palermo. It should be fun.

Check Sixt car rental before you decide. We have used them in Sicily and France and have found them to be cheaper than other car rentals. We have gotten upgrades on both trips. Other posters on Fodor have found them to be a good choice.

Ian,
I found a much better rate at AutoEuropa then had Autoeurope match it. Had to pickup the car at Catania airport and return it to Palermo airport.

We rented a car from Auto Europe (they upgraded us) in Trapani and dropped it in Cefalu 5 days later. Total damage : €138 for a Clio diesel.

Well, Sixt is 40% more & Auto Europa won't let me book that far out.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks btw.

Why book now?
I do it 60 days prior.

Because I am a comsummate planner. I like to plan it all out & book. I travel a lot & so I always am juggling multiple rooms & rentals & flights & I find that if I don't do it in one frenzy, I just might forget. I also book exhibitions & hotels for work several times a year & the same rings true. One year I was 2 weeks away from a convention & I had forgotten to book arrival night for 10 bodies.

So, I plan early.
