Car or Train Rome to Orvieto
Hello fodorites. My husband and I are going to Umbria in June flying into Fumicino. We are fairly used to driving in Italy, and although it might be stressful getting in and out of the airport, I will just wondering if you had an opinion on what others have mentioned, i.e., taking the train to Orvieto and renting a car from there. I feel like it would be a bigger hassle to do that since we would have to take one train to Termini and then another to Orvieto. Just wondering what your experiences have been.
Thanks so much. |
Not from the airport but we have driven our car from the City of Rome to Orvieto, mikster. Since you are use to driving in Italy I would think from what you have said that picking up your rental car at the airport would be a good chose. And I have had several friends that have rented their rental car at the aiport and they never had any problem.

mikster,
Another possibility for you. Depending on where you are staying Umbria, Foligno is a great place to pick up or drop. There is an Avis office right in the station building. It's about a 1.40 train into Termini. I rented through Autoeurope, although it was an Avis car. Buon viaggio! |
Thanks all...appreciate it...but I think if I have to take antoher train from Termini to FCO, then we'll just drive. Thank you so much for your input. Always appreciate it.

Hi M,
>We are fairly used to driving in Italy, ......< In that case, I would take the car directly from FCO. AFAIK, you will pay the same additional charge for pickup at a railstation in Orvieto as at FCO. ((I)) |
I picked up a car at Fiumicino and drove to Viterbo last year - same direction as Orvieto but not quite as far. On to Orvieto and north a few days later. No hassle whatsoever. Roads are well-marked. If you're used to driving in Italy (or any other large urban area, for that matter) you will have no problems.

Fantastic! Thank you so much!

Thank you!

Contrarily, I have trained Fiumicino-Rome-Orvieto a half dozen times. The Hertz office is a half block from the train station. And I always time the trip to dine at I Sette Consoli, my all time favorite in all of Italy.
|
Okay...more to think about...especially with the restaurant to consider :o)
|
We are doing as DRJ describes. Too many trips picking up the car at FCO after flying all night, and part of the previous day. At least we can sleep on the train, even if we have to switch at Termini.

Oh, I have to add: did you all see my Orvieto hotel thread? I'm still not sure about which to pick.
|
I just saw your thread...we are booked at Palazzo Piccolomini...have never stayed there before but reviews sounded great and a friend has stayed there and loved it!
