Car or Train from Venice to Ravenna and Ancona?

Greetings! In late June, a friend and I are flying into Venice and heading straight down to Le Marche for a week, then returning to Venice for three days. I have a day before the Le Marche house rental begins, and would like to spend a night en route in Ravenna.

Questions:

Would it be easier to take a train from Venice to Ravenna and then on to Ancona (don't worry - the house isn't IN Ancona)than to rent a car at the airport and drive?

If I drive, will the traffic between Ravenna and Le Marche be horrendous on a Saturday afternoon?

We definitely will rent a car and return it in Ancona before heading back to Venice -- the issue is whether to pick it up in Venice or Ancona.

Grazie!!

Still no thoughts?

Hi Abby - By train it's about 3 hrs from Venezia Mestre, normally with a change in Ferrara.

Ravenna-Ancona by train usually requires a change at Rimini.

For train timetables/fares see:
www.trenitalia.com

Otherwise if you feel fit to drive straight after a flight I can't see a major traffic problem - especially if you take the coast road down via Chioggia.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

We did a day trip to Ravenna from Venice by train. It was a lot of time and travel for no further than it is. A car would be more convenient in my opinion, but I'm not big on driving after a major flight.

Hi A,

See www.viamichelin.com or www.mappy.com for driving VCE or Mestre to Ravenna.

It's about 2 - 2:30 hr, which should be OK.

As noted, train is a drag.

Id rent the car and drive down. The sights in Ravenna are sort of spread out, and you will be happy to have a car when you get there. I still fondly remember our visit to Ravenna 25 years ago. enjoy your trip!
