car or train?
We are 4 elderly people going from Basel to Lucerne to Zürich airport and only have 4 nights. My preference is to drive. Got the freedom to see the sites and not to lug the luggage. Anyone made this trip? Suggestions on routes, places to see? Many thanks!

Personally, the Swiss transportation system is so convenient and efficient, not to mention relaxing, that I doubt if I'd ever rent a car for the places you've described. Plus, I think you see more and can move around in a train. Finally, the hassle of taking a car back before an early morning flight is not my cup of tea.
You can cab to/from the train station, or in Luzern for example, pick a hotel within two blocks--Des Alpes, Monopol and you should have little trouble.

It's a fairly ordinary scenery for Switzerland - not high mountains and not all that much to stop at along the way for the average tourist - though Bern to me is one of the finest looking cities in Europe - cities however a hassle for cars - hard to find parking as most have been pedestrianized it seems in the centre
I'd take the train for cities as the transport system is so great
You also need to buy a fairly expensive decal to be able to use the motorways and if you don't the other roads can be very tedious driving IME
But outside the cities driving is easy enough on the autoroutes at least.

Definitely go by car.
With 4 nights for a trip that takes only about 1.5 hours by train you certainly have plenty of time to explore the mountains.
Assume you mean you will stop in Lucerne and take perhaps a Lake steamer trip and ascend Mt Pilatus. Also that you will visit some of the smaller towns along the various lakes and part of the way up the mountains (some of the smaller/higher ones don't allow cars). Also try to take the train up the Jungfrau if the weather cooperates.
