car insurance in Italy

I'm looking at a car rental with avis it's $700 usd for 15 days it includes cdw and theft do I need the liability insurance and the personal accident insurance? I know amex won't cover us in Italy so I'm unsure about purchasing their other insurance options.
Thanks Trish

Hi Trish --

Certain types of insurance are required in Italy--perhaps all of the ones you have listed here. Here is a thread that might be helpful (scroll down a bit for the insurance discussion):

Hope that helps you find your answer. Good luck!

Hi T,

Yo must buy CDW in Italy. This coves the car in case of damage.

It has a deductible.

You can buy Super CDW - lower deductible.

Liability in is supplied by the renter. It covers other cars and other people.

Personal accident insurance is your call.

I would check rates at www.kemwel.com, www.gemut.com and www.autoeurope.com

If you own a car and have liability and collision insurance on it, the first thing to do is to check what your policy covers when you rent a vehicle. Make sure there are no exclusions for foreign rentals. Most policies in the US will cover the insured when they rent a car.

If you don't have collision coverage on your car, then you won't get collision coverage on the rental car itself and you would need to get the waiver.

+Most policies in the US will cover the insured when they rent a car.+

But only in US and perhaps Canada, not in Europe.

Trish, I wish I had a more direct answer to your question. However, I just spoke with Kemwell and they said I am covered for everything, zero deductible, with their rental.

$700 seems like a really good price. I would want the liability insurance. I don't know about the personal injury. Except that I was in a car accident in '02, and with no broken bones or burns, my medical bills were about 50K. How much more do they want for the liability and personal injury insurance?

Hi T,

The rental agency provides 3rd party liability ins.

Your CDW will have a deductible.

Super CDW will reduce the size of the deductible.

Have you checked rates with www.kemwel.com and www.autoeurope.com?

PS

The personal accident ins covers you and your passengers.

Only the CDW is required in Italy.

You will also need an International Driver's Permit.

US car insurance does NOT cover europe - unless you have bought some special rider. It covers you in the US and Canada only - nowhere else.
