car in Salzburg?

Do we need a car while in Salzburg for a few days, or can we walk, take trains, cabs, etc to get around easily enough?

Also, we'd like to see the lakes and mountains ala Sound of Music. Would a car save us money or are the bus tours reasonably priced?

Thanks!

Absolutely not. See

Salzburg is quite a small town - and part of the old town is for pedestrians only. A car is a complete waste except for day trips. (We have been 3 times - and just dump the car in the garage - except for 1 day trip each time.)

I would not advise having a car while in Salzburg. It is quite a small town and they have a wonderul bus system. I would reccomend buying the Salzburg Pass, which covers many attractions and unlimited bus service for a very reasonable price.

If you do take the car I hope that you have chosen a hotel that has free parking as the rates for parking in Salzburg parking lots are very expensive and open parking spaces are very hard to come by. We had a car when we were in Salzburg last October but only because we were travelling throughout Germany and Austria by car. We stayed at the Via Roma hotel, which had free parking and was quite nce and convenient to old town by bus. However, if we were just going to Salzburg we would use the extensive bus system to travel around Salzburg and surrounding areas.

Enjoy your trip, Salzburg is a wonderful place to visit.

A car is not necessary. We parked ours while there last month and only used it for one day trip to Berchtesgaden.

The Salzburg pass is a very good recommendation. It is a credit card and well worth the money if you are going to the sites. We all felt we would do this again. The tourist info in Mozartplatz will sell them to you for different lengths of time.

Do the Sound of Music tour by bus. The guides have a good time with the tour and you will not have to drive.
