car in iceland

We are traveling for 6 days the first week of June in the southern part of Iceland. I am getting ready to rent a car and at this time am just planning to get a small car. We do not plan to travel out of the way places. We will take the car to Westman Island and to Jokulsarlon. Is a small to mid size car okay at that time of year?
thank you,

Should be. We visited in mid-May and did the entire ring road (plus some) in a Renault Clio. We rented through Lagoon, and were happy with them.

You might want to have this moved to the Europe forum.

I have messed this up twice now. not sure what I am doing. I will try to change it to Europe.

As I mentioned in your misplaced thread, we had a Renault Clio for our Ring Road trip in mid-May. Other than a lack of compression brakes, which would have been a tremendous help as we made our decent into Seyðisfjörður, and the world's smallest back seat, it was fine (we spent plenty of time on gravel roads too, but certainly not any F roads).

We used Lagoon Car Rental - would use them again too if we ever return.

thanks much, did you book directly with them ahead of time. I usually use SIXT or Auto Europe

You could ask the moderators to move this thread and combine it with your thread on the Europe board. That should save all the responses on both threads. Just click the triangle on this OP and in the text box ask . . .

Yes, booked directly with them ahead of time. I'd originally booked with Budget and Avis, but after reading some scathing reviews, I switched gears and booked with Lagoon.

Here's that trip report if you think it might help:

Ah, neighbors. Sort of - we're about 2.5 hours southwest:)

We rented a medium size car a few years ago (from Budget), drove it all the way to the Western Fjords and had no issues. Iceland was one of the best trips ever, you'll love it.

by chance did you go to Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Island)?

Yes, took the car ferry, no issue. Roads on the island were very good.

Yep a compact passenger car will do.
In June, the roads are quite easy to drive so you don't even need a 4x4 unless your are heading to any F-Road.

I rented mine with Cars Iceland which is a local company by the airport. But there are plenty there, Reykjavik cars, holdur, Go Iceland...etc. Be sure that whichever company you choose, it includes a good insurance coverage and unlimited km (not all of them offer that). Haaaaaaaaaave funnn :)

Thanks, I hope to get a car rented in the next few days, I have been busy and have not had time to take care of this.
