My wife and I always travel with another couple. I usually end up doing all the driving and missing the action because I have to concentrate so much on driving on unfamiliar roads. Throw in too that most of the cars are manual stick shifts and driving on the wrong side of the road, I'd be a complete basket case.
We used a private driver for our October 2011 Ireland visit. WE did not need a driver to get around Dublin or Galway. The Driver was Tom and was hired out from About us - A Rural Experience. Basically, he picked us up from Galway after our stay there and took us around southern Ireland for 5 days. We stopped at the Cliffs of Moher, Killarney, Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork, and the Dingle Peninsula. He made suggestions for places to stop, dining & pub suggestions, and he even made reservations for us to tour Smithwicks in Kilkenny. I thought having a private driver was well worth the cost. I can't remember what the price was but at the time I thought it was reasonable for 4 adults. Tom had a great personality and his knowledge of Ireland was helpful. He didn't do tours in northern Ireland but that could be arranged through his mutual friends if needed.
