Car headlights on in Croatia?
 

Kastelsegnic posted a thread recently about driving in Croatia. I'm really confused about the lights on all the time business. I havent read about this in my DK guide.(Not disbelieving you Kastelsegnic) Do people there really drive about in the sunshine with lights on?
Picking up hire car in Dubrovnik in 12 days time to tour Croatia so just want to be sure.

Whether they do routinely or not might be somewhat irrelevant. I assume it would always be safer to drive with the headlights on during the day whether others do so or not.

But perhaps we have been mislead for years about the degree of safety this practice actually delivers.

Cary - I thought only the Italian govt had been stupid enough to introduce this law.

It sounds like the Croatians may have followed ... :(

i know, to me also it sounds strange but i confirm that you have to drive with your headlights on, at anytime of the day or night. Cant really see the point, but you might get stopped and fined if you dont, and you will really stand out as everybody else's does. Seatbelts are compulsury also (not sure if they are for the back seats?) and 0 tolerance for drink and drive.
Weirdly, it seem to be ok to drive a moped or a motorbike without a helmet on though...everybody does it (despite what it says in the link above, it's not really followed in practice, but obviouly should be)
Same with mobiles while driving...
But better be safe than sorry!
And the police does run random checks on the road, so you might gets stopped anyway and asked for your papers, so really make sure you abide with all the above to avoid trouble.

Intrepid - On a murky wet day in England you might want to keep your headlights on.

But with bright sun shining out of a clear blue sky in Italy, what IS the point???

As I stated in my first reply, I have always been under the impression that having headlights on increased the safety margin. I would assume, perhaps incorrectly, that in bright daylight or not, having your headlights on increases the possibility of an oncoming vehicle knowing you are there.

As I mentioned earlier, perhaps having headlights on at all times doesn't really increase the safety margin. If that is so then do we have any references to prove or disprove this "myth" or are we to simply rely on what people "think" is reasonable?
