An update. We did take the ferry from Dubrovnik to Bari. The sea was pretty calm and with two Bonine tablets, I did fine. The most luxurious thing about this ferry was the bottom floor where the cars, trucks and buses were parked. It was a sparking stainless steal from floor to ceiling. The total contrast was the actual living space of the ship. It was packed, not efficient, old dirty carpet. But it was an experience and an adventure. There was a tour group and it was nice to hear them singing. Most people spent the night in chairs arranged like airplane chairs with a little more room. We were "lucky" to get a cabin (had been on a wait list) which had a bunk bed and a single for the two of us. It was old, shabby, and only had a sink, but the bed linen seemed clean. Some of the cabins had bathrooms, but we couldn't get one. Our cabin was next to the men's bathroom and we could hear everyone coming and going as well as the bathroom doors banging with the movement of the ship when they weren't closed properly.
The ship left about an hour late but arrived on time, about ten hours later, in Bari. There was no information given about how to get back to your car or what time to be there. We had to wait about 45 minutes to get to our car as there wasn't room to navigate with our luggage back to the car and although we had driven on almost first, our car was in the back.
Would I do it again, probably not, but it makes a good story and gave us an extra travel day.
