Car & Driver

We'd like to hire a car & driver for 6 days to drive from Southampton through Wales and a bit of Western England. We've been to England before but this time my husband would like to see it. Any recommendations of companies to hire?

Hi, nmweaver,

I put "car hire plus chauffeur UK" into google and came up with this:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?clie...IvOA8QeCqKa4Dg

the problem is that it is most unusual to hire a car with a driver here - I don't say that it can't be done but it would be pretty expensive; there would be not only the driver's pay for the day but also his/her overnight and subsistence expenses.

good luck in finding what you want.

[PS - have you thought of the train?]

As annhig says, I suspect that a car and driver would be exceedingly expensive. I will be in the UK next month, traveling exclusively by public transport, and I have not had too much difficulty planning a trip through the Welsh Marches and a bit of North Wales.

My itinerary is here:

You can use Rome2Rio to get an initial idea of what is possible, but need to use their links to timetables to make sure their suggestions are feasible. Or use Google Maps.

I have booked some tickets through the National Express site (long distance buses) and National Rail where prices are cheaper for tickets bought ahead of time, but will buy the rest as needed.

You could also consider public transport between towns and day trips from towns. For instance:

To hire a driver for that length of time would cost an utter fortune.

But totally doable is to hire driver guides for day trips. Travel from town to town by train and the you could hire a driver to tour around for a day or two.

What happen to the plans for Southampton to Stockholm drive?

This

works better than Rome 2 Rio in the UK.

Southampton,,, makes me think you are coming in by ship. Most of the cruise companies pick up by driver and car inside the UK. I'd talk to your cruise company and see if you can come to a deal.

Agree that if the driver is going with you for the while trip not only do you have to pay for car, driver, gas, etc but also the for the driver's hotel and meals.

Are you prepared to go to that expense - thousands of pounds?

I think much better to travel by train and get a driver for a day trip in the countryside when you need it.
