Captain Train

Does anyone know the new name for this site? It was a great place to buy train tickets for France but I can’recall the new name.

Pay

www.trainline.com

PalenQ May 5th, 2019 02:20 PM

French railway's site www.oui.sncf is said by some here to be better than before to use but yes many many folks who use French trains a lot, like StCirq often recommend www.trainline.com.

Thank you both.

Beware, trainline.com now charges a booking fee to non-Europeans (based on browsing address). Best to use loco2 instead, or even the much-improved oui.sncf (the app is very good).

StCirq May 6th, 2019 12:41 PM

I have never been charged a fee by Trainline. I use them all the time. I live in Europe but my browsing address is a US one.

k_marie May 6th, 2019 01:24 PM

I have noted those additional fees. Disappointing. I'll try oui.sncf. Thanks!

PalenQ May 7th, 2019 02:28 PM

What are those fees?

k_marie May 8th, 2019 07:33 AM

It's called a booking fee.

i just did a search for CDG to Lyon and made a selection. Included in the results was the line, 'A booking fee of €1.35 will apply to this transaction.' Not going to pay it if I can avoid it.

PalenQ May 8th, 2019 08:31 AM

Less than a cup of coffee - how much more time will you spend on oui.sncf.

k_marie May 8th, 2019 08:50 AM

It seems that if I link to trainline from maninseat61, there are no booking fees.

Odin May 8th, 2019 09:02 AM

I doubt that.

k_marie May 8th, 2019 09:14 AM

I know one shouldn't believe everything one reads but it says, 'No booking fees. No hidden costs.
Same price as the carriers. We add nothing on top.

StCirq May 8th, 2019 11:10 AM

It's true. I use www.trainline.com ALL the time - probably 100 trips a year. There are no booking fees, nothing on top of SNCF (which I also use, because I have several of their discount cards).

I don't know where you are getting additional fees, but I never do. Maybe because I use a European credit card?

k_marie May 8th, 2019 11:28 AM

Maybe I need to clean my cache, or eliminate my cookies, or something. For our trip in November which will includes several segments by train, I'll just link through maninseat61.

maninseat61 sells tickets thru Rail Europe, I believe but not thru trainline - that is just one of zillions of links he site has.

k_marie May 8th, 2019 01:55 PM

Go to maninseat61. See train travel in France. Link to trainline. Search your route.

PalenQ May 8th, 2019 02:59 PM

OK - wow has changed a lot since I last looked in detail. Books everything thru other companies like trainline - site has really gone commercial - will arrange your trip and sell anything needed. But the best train site around - especially if going from London to anyplace in Europe.

Thanks for info.

Yes, I did that. No booking fees when booking a trip within France.
Booking fee applies when booking a trip within the UK.

And it makes no difference whether you click on the link from the maninseat61 or whether you access the trainline website directly. The link on maninseat61 is only a hyperlink. Booking fees are not based on browsing address, it's based on the value of your ticket, payment method and country that the journey is taking place in.

And why shouldn't there be a booking fee, why should a resource such as the trainline be free to search, book and pay for tickets? Did the website come together by magic?

StCirq May 11th, 2019 03:31 AM

No, but the Trainline people entered into a commercial agreement with SNCF whereby they wouldn't charge more than the national railroad. If they'd wanted to become another RailEurope, they could have,I suppose.

I just booked trains for July through them and paid no booking fees.
