Capri with teens?
We are cruising the Mediterranean in August with our teenage son (15) and daughter (13). In Naples, we plan to take the train and spend a short time at Pompei, then return and take the hydrofoil over to Capri. Any suggestions of things to do/see in Capri that doesn't involve shopping that would be of interest to teens?

If they like to walk/hike, there are many wonderful walks. For example, from the center of Anacapri you can take the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro and then walk down.
But if you have only a day, or part of a day, I would encourage you to make a choice between Pompeii and Capri. Pompeii deserves much more than 'a short time' and Capri needs more than a short time to get out and away from the crowds of daytrippers. |
yes, trying to do these on a one day port stop on a cruise - probably not a good idea - these activities will take longer than you expect. I would advise chosing one or the other. There is enough to do on Capri for a pleasant day, very different than the ruins of Pompeii.

No way I would advise doing both in one day.

thanks everyone - we are in port from 10 am to 10 pm, so we were thinking we could fit in both. the kids won't last longer than about 1.5-2 hrs in pompei.

You need to understand that the boats from Capri stop running in late afternoon. If you're there at 8 pm (or even 7 or 6 - checek the ferry schedule) you're going to spend the night.
I really don;t see how you can do both Pompeii ad Capri in one day - but if you do - do Capri first. You can;t get stuck in Pompeii. |
>the kids won't last longer than about 1.5-2 hrs in pompei.<
I don't know about that, you can spend 3 hrs there without batting an eyelash...ask my kids, 10 & 12 at the time we took them. They weren't even museum-type kids at that time. We did a group tour then wandered a bit on our own, and watched some excavations in progress. We would have stayed longer but the heat got the best of us. |
well I'd suggest doing Capri first then maybe its doable for both since you are in port until late - it might be super hot which could make Pompeii pretty unpleasant but the transportation to and from Pompeii is more frequent and runs later than the boats to Capri.
As another poster mentioned there are pleasant hikes in Capri and some ruins opportunities. Blue Grotto, if open, is worth the money and hassel - not everyone is a fan but its pretty unique. There is a chairlift up in Anacapri that takes you to a ruined Roman villa - amazing views! And the little buses that wind about are quite an experience - amazing views! |
