Capri,Sorrento,or Naples ?
We will be in Amalfi for five nights in May 2010. I had thought I would like to spend 2 nights
on Capri but am wondering if it will work time wise with our departure out of Naples. Our plane leaves Naples at 12 noon on Tuesday May 18th. Would we be better off forgoing Capri and staying closer to the airport either Sorrento or Naples? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks |
You don't want to rely on a boat to get you to your plane. Weather may cause the boat trip to be cancelled or delayed. Stay in either Naples or Sorrento. There's a bus from Sorrento to the Naples airport. Here's the schedule: www.curreriviaggi.it. Note the English flag for a translation.

Mimar,
Thanks for the info. I will stay in Sorrento and take the bus to Naples airport. bxl4373 |
Second Mimar's advice. About 5 years ago we were in Capri for 3 nights. On our departure day we needed to catch a Eurostar to Rome because we had purchased first class tickets for a particular time. When we went to the pier we found that our particular boat company had cancelled crossings due to rough water. As luck would have it, another line was still running. They handed out bags upon boarding due to the rough ride. Very rough crossing but learned that DH and I tolerate rough boat rides well!

I hope you can still spend at least one night in Capri, though. It's a beautiful island and very nice after the day trippers all leave.

I would never miss Capri. In fact, I would take the risk of missing my flight rather than stay in Sorrento.
Capri is MAGIC!!! Thin |
Thanks everyone for your advice. I thought I would list my itinerary and see if you suggest
some rearranging to allow for at least one night at Aiano B&B in Capri. We should arrive at our B&B in Rome about 4pm on Sunday May 2. We are planning on staying in Rome from May 2-6, arrive in Tuscany May 7-11, Amalfi May 12-15 and Sorrento May 16-17 leave from Naples May18. We went to Italy in May 2008. We were in Rome for only 3 days took tours of major sites but visits were very limited. We did hire a pvt. guide for May 3 for an in depth description of major sites. We have never stayed in Montepulciano or Amalfi. I would love to spend at least one in Capri. Should we change things up a bit? I have to say that I am brand new to this site and have found the knowledge of seasoned travelers to be invaluable. Thanks in advance. BXL4373 |
Perhaps you should go from Tuscany to Capri, and then stay in the Amalfi, moving up to Napoli or Sorrento the night before your flight. You can stay in a cheap hotel in Sorrrento and pay a lot of a car service or (my choice) stay in some old grand pile with a great view of the bay of Napoli in Napoli, and eat pizza for dinner and pay a little less for a taxi the next morning. Check out review on Tripadvisor for the Hotel Romeo or the slightly more distant San Francesco al Monte in Napoli.

Zeppole,
If you were to stay in Sorrento, where would you stay? BXL |
I have stayed at the Caesar Augusto in Sorrento. It is an old first-class hotel with huge bathrooms. It is just a short walk to the "main drag" of Sorrento.
I would only stay in a room at the back of the hotel overlooking the gardens. The hotel has a swimming pool. Thin |
Well, if I wasn't going to raid my life savings and stay at Don Alfonso 1890 Relais, eat my last meal and die and go to heaven
http://www.donalfonso.com/en/relais.htm I would probably stay a the "back end" of Sorrento, which is just a mass of lemon groves and no tourists. Places like this http://www.greenparadise.biz/ http://www.ilmirtobianco.it/it/le_camere.html http://www.villamiragalli.com/english/villa.htm But I'm not sure how convenient they are to the airport. |
