Capri, Public Transport

Is there affordable public transport throughout Capri and up to Anacapri? How much should one expect to pay for the service?

Not sure about throughout Capri - a lot of places are reachable only on foot. There is definitely transti between Capri and Anacapri - as well as up from the Marina Grande.

Here is an excerpt from www.capri.net:

Funicular railway
The red funicular railway train enables visitors to reach the center of Capri in just 5 minutes, via a panoramic route over the lemon trees and vegetable gardens.
Trains depart every 15 minutes or more frequently still when demand is particularly high. In rush hours passengers are likely to have to queue before boarding.
Small dogs are allowed on the train, but must be muzzled and kept on a lead.
Tickets can be purchased at the Funicular railway ticket office in the center of Capri or in Marina Grande, to the left of the port, where all the ticket offices for the various hydrofoil and ferry companies are located.

Bus
Little orange buses travel along the routes Capri-Anacapri, Capri-Marina Piccola, Capri-Marina Grande (the so-called S.Costanzo line), Capri-Damecuta, Marina Piccola-Anacapri (during the summer season only), Anacapri-Grotta Azzura, and Anacapri-Faro.
Buses run frequently, but times are subject to variation.
Tickets can be purchased directly on board, at the Funicular railway ticket office in Marina Grande, or in Piazza Martiri d’Ungheria, close to the Piazzetta, where the bus station is situated. Tickets are valid for all forms of public transport. 3 types of ticket are available: corsa singola (single), orario (hourly) and giornaliero (daily).
During the high season it is normal to find long queues at the main bus station: the routes taken by the buses can also be followed on foot, offering pleasurable and often extremely panoramic walks.

Scooter
Scooters (and helmets) can be hired at the port, in Capri, and Anacapri. Bikes can be rented for a few hours, for an entire day or for a few days, in which case clients can usually obtain a really good deal.

Monte Solaro Chair lift
A chair lift connects the center of Anacapri with the peak of Monte Solaro, some 589 meters above sea level and the highest point of the island.
An exhilarating experience is had by all those who choose to board the chair lift and journey high above the roof tops and vineyards, over the lush Mediterranean foliage and trees to the top of the mountain.
From March to October the facility is open from 09.30 to sunset; from November to February from 10.15 to 15.00. The chairlift is closed on Tuesdays.

Thank you, GAC. That is just the information I needed. I love these boards!

When i took a bus to the Blue Grotto it dropped me off at the main road about 1/4 mile uphill from the grotto - there are plenty enough buses that do drop right at the blue grotto but at times they do not go right down, at least in my case. You can of course take a boat to the grotto from the main port you arrived at in Capri city.
