Capri or Ischia?
 

My fiancee and I will be spending our honeymoon in the Amalfi Coast and we're trying to decide between staying on Ischia or Capri (after spending some time on Positano). Any thoughts? Also, how much time would you recommend on either island?

Ischia is tiny with not too much to do. Capri is a little larger with little boutiques. I'd advise having a city break in Naples - full of antiquities - before heading the the Neapolitan Riviera and taking it easy in Positano where there isn't really anything too strenuous or taxing.

Do Ischia then, spend all day long in the Spa.

After five nights, Amalfi/Positano becomes very relaxing, but if it's your first time, which I assume it is, I think you're mad to simply take an holiday in such an historic area and not make an attempt to see what lies behind the culture.

I'd spend five night in Amalfi or Positano, the choice is yours (of course), three nights in Capri. Depending on your budget and time, Florence, and Venice - you say you hate cities, you may as well stay at home and find a luxury spa resort and do nothing if you don't want to experience it. I'm not a city person, but I always enjoy the sights, and I try to offset it with a relaxing stop on the same holiday so you have killed two birds with one stone...

Thanks again. We were in Italy last summer and did Santa Margherita, Florence, Venice, and Rome, so we are focusing strictly on the Amalfi Coast area this time. However, we may swing up to Sardinia after doing Positano and Capri.

My dear, we're having a whole conversation, this is marvellous.

Whilst I do truly love the Amalfi coast, I always holiday there in the fall (my homage to America - saying fall - not the holiday), I feel that it is such a long way (from America) to go to see relatively little, and on such an important (not in my eyes, but most people's) vacation.

This is something completely different, but might make a change - have you considered a little touring holiday in Spain? Or perhaps Greece - magical in October. I know you said Italy, but I think a change seems so much more exciting, especially to coincide with this change of life.

I've only daytripped to Capri, so I can't speak to staying there, but I have stayed on Ischia and would highly recommend the Hotel La Villarosa if you should decide to stay there. It is a wonderful hotel with a thermal pool, various spa treatments available, and it sits in the middle of a small tropical forest. So relaxing.

A city break can also be relaxing- stay at an hotel with a spa - nothing better than coming back from a days sightseeing and shopping and retiring to the spa for some luxurious relaxation.
