Capri on our own

We are going on a cruise in May; one port is Capri (including Naples, but we have visited Naples previously). We would like to go to Capri and wondered if anyone has gone there on their own (vs. tour arranged by cruise line) and if it is worth while. We will be there only for one day.

I'm not sure what you mean saying one port is Capri. Is the boat docking in Naples or Capri?

Many people go to Capri on their own. If you use the search feature you'll find a lot of info. If you dock in Naples you take a ferry.

I'm confused also. If you dock in Capri then you're already there and don't need a tour. If you dock in Naples, then there are frequent ferries to Capri throughout the day. It's very simple and certainly doesn't need an official tour.

Capri is very picturesque, has a VERY upscale centre and of course the ruined emperor's palace. A very pleasant day trip.

hmmm hang out for a day in Naples or on Capri? the winner would be Capri IMO. You can get a ferry / hydrofoil from very near where your ship docks in Naples - easily done. Once you get to Capri you can go for exploring by boat - maybe heading to the Blue Grotto - or take a bus or funicular for some land sightseeing. You could also splurge and use a taxi to cover maximum amount of ground / sights. I really enjoy the chairlift up in Anacapri - there is also a church there with an amazing tile floor if that sort of thing interests you. I just love wandering around, seeing the lovely homes and gardens, then having a long lunch at an outdoor restaurant.

Actually getting there shouldn't be too difficult - unless mooring up off the coast of Sorrento or Capri, cruiseships almost always dock where these two are.....

..... and you can see the quay head where the hydrofoils leave from at the bottom of the picture.

The leaflets available here - especially the one on the island's monuments - may be of help in planning what you do on arrival....
