Capri, Italy ?

What's the best time of year to go to Capri ?

marginal_margiela Jan 31st, 2008 06:35 PM

June. And you absolutely MUST stay at Quisisana.

Don't forget your diamond Rolex.

Yes and bring a big fat bank account..:)
La Quisana is Tres Chic and very expensive.
I was in Capri at the end of June for 3 days..Lovely island.

I really like Spring :-) (April/May) not too warm...not too many crowds, etc.

WTnow Jan 31st, 2008 10:13 PM

We were quite disappointed in Capri, it is dirty and run down and not very impressive.

Lots of boring stores if you like that.

CasaDelCipresso Feb 1st, 2008 06:26 AM

REALLY? I can see being disapointed maybe if you just hang around the piazzetta with all the other tourists...but, Capri, run-down??? I've never heard that one before (!) If I could only afford to live somewhere so "run down"!

mr_go Feb 1st, 2008 06:33 AM

Just because it's so cold and snowy here today...here are some of our pix from "dirty, rundown" Capri bathed in the glorious June sunshine.

Maybe Hermes and Ferragamo didn't sweep off their sidewalks that day.

vjpblovesitaly Feb 1st, 2008 06:42 AM

Those are great photos, Mr_Go. You do have to admit, though, that there Villa Jovis place is a bit run down.

mr_go Feb 1st, 2008 06:49 AM

Thanks, vj. Yeah...them Romans couldn't build for beans. Place looked ruined to me.

LoveItaly Feb 1st, 2008 07:10 AM

LOL vj, yes the trouble with all of Italy is the buildings are soooo old!

Mr_go, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful photos of Capri with us. Sigh, it brought back beautiful memories.

marginal_margiela Feb 1st, 2008 07:20 AM

Capri dirty and rundown? Boring stores? Sweetie darling, you obviously got off the Greyhound bus in Capri City, Alabama, because you can't possibly be talking about Capri, Italy.

I've been to Capri in April, in May, in September and in October. All are good times to visit, although the sea can be rougher in spring than in autumn. To quote from my book about the Bay of Naples and south of Italy, "Capri is enchanting. The same is true for all of these islands, but Capri is the most beautiful of these most beautiful sisters. With more than 800 species of plants endemic to the island, it is truly a Garden of Eden. It also may be the most exploited island you'll ever find, but as with the others, put some distance between yourself and the overrun marinas and piazzas and shopping streets and wait until all the camera-clutching tourists disappear on the late afternoon ferries. Then it will be just you and the Capriots and the few others who remain." Etc, etc.. The 'other islands' referred to are Ischia and Procida. Both lovely places to stay for a few days or more. Procida especially, the perfect little Italian island, with not a boutique or Rick Steves book in sight! To see a small preview of my book, Mezzogiorno', go to http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/107652 To see more photographs of Capri and the Bay of Naples, go to http://www.gardentouring.net/, then click on: '2009 Bay of Naples Preview' on the right-hand side under 'Groups'.

I went in mid-September and the weather was lovely, also it was not too crowded.

Please someone comment that Capri is not only for the rich and high end shoppers! I have been twice, once in May and once in Sept. I did not stay at the Quisiana! there are plenty of lovely hotels more reasonably priced. Also I did not set foot in any of the high priced shops but I had a wonderful time hiking around the island, doing the Blue Grotto thing, taking the chair lift on Anacapri etc. There are so many lovely gardens, homes and views of the sea and cliffs - it is a gorgeous island to explore, not just for the rich and famous (or wannabe's!)As long as you go when the weather is warm (not in the winter!) I would think any month would be delightful.

Suec1 -

We stayed at La Minerva (as apparently Mr. Go did, based on his beautiful photos). It was much less than Quisisana but the rooms were gorgeous as were the views (see Mr. Go's pictures). As I recall, the price for a deluxe double (with a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom with a window looking out over the Med/Faraglioni) was something on the order of 230 euros - I'm sure by now the rate is higher, and the dollar is lower, but that's life.

We were there 2 nights and loved it all - particularly after the daytrippers left the island.

Agree on late May or June. Weather is warm enough but the worst of the tourist invasion hasn't yet happened.

kismetchimera Feb 1st, 2008 01:30 PM

thing0rjus,
That was great!!!

mr_go Feb 1st, 2008 01:39 PM

Yes, Sam, we did stay at La Minerva. And we liked it a lot.

That was one of the reasons why the "dirty and run down" comment seemed so contrary to my experience. The staff at La Minerva were almost fetishistic in their cleanliness.

It's a beautiful island (if a little on the spendy side). We're glad we went!
