What should one absolutely not miss seeing when going to Capri for the day?

Take the bus up to Anicapri and ride the chair lift. Touristy or not I LOVED it. I had to do it! Watch Sophia Laurens movie It Started in Naples before you go. That will make you want to ride the chair lift for sure!

Go to the Blue Grotto, very touristy, a bit pricey, but worth every cent! The image of the azzure water will stay with you forever.

PJI is so right about the chairs, it was the most enjoyable part of my day in Capri. And that is a great movie she mentions.

I have been to Capri twice and have never been able to get into the Blue Grotto. It is not something you can visit on any given day due to tides and the season. But if you have the chance to get in, take it. If it looks half as good as it does in pictures, it must be a beautiful sight.

Others will disagree, and yes, it can feel gimmicky and too touristy, but I still would recommend a visit to the famous Blue Grotto.

When you buy your bus ticket to Anacapri, buy a full-day pass and just go everywhere the bus goes (which is about half of the island on the Anacapri side).

Definitely take the chair lift out of Anacapri. Fabulous views from the top and on the way up and down. There's a small cafe at the top where you can buy drinks (coffee, sodas, etc.) and snacks. There's also a public swimming pool which is filled only in the summer.

Poffertje, I also suggest the Blue Grotto. We all know its touristy SO WHAT. Its still cool. Keep your head down though, my hubby almost ended up with a black eye when our boat driver elbowed him in the head when pulling us through the small hole. :)

We couldn't get into the blue grotto because of weather but the boat ride around the island was well worth the trip.

If you are into church's, San Michelle is a little church with a floor that has the garden of Eden painted on it. I believe it's in Anacapri. YOu can walk on wooden planks around the floor and then go up to the balcony for a birds eye view.

San Michele is in Anacapri and it is very neat. I'm not sure I'd say it's a "do not miss", though.

Yes, as touristy as it is, I would say the Blue Grotto is a do not miss. And the chairlift in Anacapri is another good suggestion. I'd also go to the Gardens of Augustus - you get a good view of the Faraglioni (one of Capri's other famous landmarks). Oh, and I'd also sit on the Piazzetta and have a drink. Doesn't matter what it costs, it's the atmosphere that counts here!

Capri has so many beautiful areas, it's hard to pick the highlights!

Go to ana capri and do the chair lift and have luch there. Go back to Capri and have desset at this gelateria that makes fresh waffle cones for gelato as well as have perhaps the best cookies in all of italy. Then take a 2 hour tour around the island. green and white grotto in my opinion are quite lovley and do not cost anything to see. Blue grotto cost about 16 euros to enter and then they expect a tip of at least 10 euros to make them happy.

To add to the above answers one more place to be visited: Villa San Michele - the small 'palace' of the novelist Axel Munte (who wrote the book - Villa from San Michele). It is as a small museum, full of nice sculptures and old art objetcs. It has a nice patio. It is a very nice view to Augustus garden and to the see.

The Blue Grotto (in my opinion) is highly overrated. The boat ride out was nice, but the 2 minutes I spent inside the grotto was underwhelming. If you only have a day, I suggest you take your time to walk through the village...over the the Garden of Augustus. If you can be there between the tours, it's quite a lovely place. It's not a huge place, so the walking is very do-able. Then if you have time, take the lift up to ana Capri. Check out my web site

please do the boat ride around capri- it is a highlight and takes about 21/2 hours, and they take you to the ble grottoe(outrageous but worth it cost to go in ) the anacapri chair lift is terriffic

in capri you can get superb freshly squeezed orange juice in the main shopping area at the bus stop- worht the hydrofoil over!

We will also be in Capri for 2 nights and one day. What attire would you suggest we bring for that day? It seems that shorts would be appropriate for a boat ride. Is there any reason that we would need to wear anything other than shorts on that day?

How energetic are you?
We walked to the Arch and then almost all the way back and up to Villa Jovis. You certainly get a sense of the "verticality" of the landscape.
