Capri by organised day tour or self?

Hi I will be in Italy during September and staying in Naples for 3 days. I was wondering whether it would be best to do Capri by organised day tour or whether it is easy enough to head over on the ferry and explore for ourselves?

We had planned to bo Pompei and the Mt Vesuvius crater walk by organised day tour (I heard that it is difficult to do the Mt Vesuvius crater walk by public transport?)but thought Capri should be easier enough to do ourselves?

any advice would be very much appreciated.

Oh, by yourself: easy to do and better result.
September is perfect !
If possible, try to spend there at least one night; the best of Capri is after sunset when the daily tourists leave the island by the last hydrofoil of the day.

Have a lovely trip, ciao.

If you have only the three days, I think it would make sense to visit Pompei and then relax with an overnight on Capri which, as Vincenzo says improves as the sun sets and is so lovely when the sun rises. And also best to explore by yourselves, at your own pace.

I don't know this first hand, but I wonder about visiting Vesuvius just at this time due to the current problems in Naples. It might be best to see it at a distance-and it is a very dramatic sight!

Have a fine time!

thank you both heaps for the advice about capri, I was considering using Naples as our base and using organised tours (because what I had read in the tour books about Naples made it sound a little seady for independednt travel by women??)

However I had not factored in the current events of Naples. Which from what your suggesting you would not recommend using Naples as a base?

Hi, gaznic -

I agree with the others that Capri is easily visited on one's own - and well worth an overnight stay.

As for Naples, some people love it and others hate it. I visited as a solo female, and had no problem. Yes, there are parts that are rather seedy - but it is also vibrant and lively, and it holds some real treasures.

Hope that helps. . . .

Hi Gaznic - 'I heard that it is difficult to do the Mt Vesuvius crater walk by public transport?'

Not so. There's a Vesuvius bus service from Pompeii several times daily:

The Vesuvius Bus departs from Pompeii (- Piazza Amfiteatro) at:

08.00 - 09.00* - 09.30 - 10.15 - 10.30 - 11.25 - 12.25 - 13.20 - 14.30 - 15.30*

[Departures leave Pompeii Terminus bus station 5 mins before the above].

The service is year round except -
* 09.00 and 15.30 deps (- 1 April - 30 Sept only)

Fare: € 8.60 round trip. Journey time: 70 mins

The bus also picks up (- infrequently) at Ercolano.

Service operator: Vesuviana Mobilita

For details:

Bus tickets can be bought at:
- Circumvesuviana railway station OR
- 'Sgambati' (- station newsagents/tobacconist kiosk)

Entrance fee to the crater: € 6.50

Hope this helps ...

Thanks to all for the replys, and thanks heaps Steve about the info on visiting Mt Vesuvius independently. I assumed we had to take the pricey tour!

Capri is definitely easy to do on your own. I have done it as a day trip from Naples but agree with those who say it makes sense to try for an overnight stay there
