Worth the visit in August? If so, what is the best way to see the island. Thanks for your advice.

August is going to be full of Italians visiting Capri. I hope you like big groups everwhere on the island.

My husband and I will be there in August too. So what if there are crowds - it's what you have to do when you can only travel certain times of the year....

It will be hot and crowded, however, you will still love and enjoy the beauty of the island, lovely people, excellent little shops, so many small great cafe, the best views in the world and a lot more. There are buses that you can take you around almost all day. Don't forget to go to
Anacapri. Have a great time.

Capri is absolutly amazing despite the crowds and heat you may face. ignore that and drink it all in. As mentioned you can take a bus around the island. But when you arrive and go up the tram to the small village just walk about two hundred yards it is up hill to a beautiful park and you could sit there all day taking in the views.

PG - From my experience a good way to enjoy Capri in high season is to go against the flow.

Rather than joining the crowds that herd from the port onto the funicular up to Capri town, catch the minibus instead directly up to ANACAPRI - which is relatively uncrowded in the mornings.

Take the chairlift before it gets busy up to Monte Solaro - the best viewpoint in the whole of Capri.

After Anacapri, if you fancy a swim head down to Marina Piccola - and perhaps have lunch or a picnic there.

End up in Capri town after lunch - by which time some of the day-trippers have dispersed and it may be a little less crowded.

This usually works well for me ...

To get away from the crowds, you could take a walk to the Faraglioni Rocks and back. You will pass beautiful villas and pretty foliage. There are a few cafes on the way where you can stop for a drink.

Even with all the daytrippers, Capri is still beautiful. It is wonderful to sit in the Piazzetta and watch all the people walk by--the fabulously wealthy and the ordinary.

Stop by Carthusia and buy some perfume.

I visited Capri last mid-Sept and was amazed at the hoards of visitors from all countries (myself included) and tour groups. I stayed 2 nights and most enjoyed a boat tour around the island - perfect weather, fresh air and sun with beautiful scenery. Also really enjoyed the hike up to Villa Jovis through the residential area and out to Arco Naturale.

IF - I ever went back to Capri during the "season" I would:

hire a private boat to get there and take me on a tour around the island.

drop me off at Marina Piccola (avoiding the Disneyland-on-a-bad-day crowds) at Marina Grande

spend the day on that side of the island getting some sun and maybe a hike - don't go anywhere near town

venture into town only very late afternoon - after about 4pm

if you are staying for 2 days - see Anacapri too. The Chiesa di San Michele has a beautiful hand painted tile floor of Paradise on Earth. Very worth seeing. The chairlift ride does have gorgeous views!

What kind of visit? Ar you talking about just doing a day trip there or spending a few nights? I've often mentioned that it seems the vast majority of those who were "disappointed" in Capri -- and there are a lot of them -- tend to be the ones who only did a daytrip in the height of season. The best way to enjoy Capri is to be there before and after all those crowds are on the island. Strolling the little paths in the moonlight and the breezes on a hot summer night is an incredible experience that will only be enjoyed by those who stay at night.
