Capri?
I always hear people say Capri is wonderful - why? I am not saying that in sarcasm, I am just trying to decide whether to go north of Rome or south.

Dear xxxx, you will get many opinions now, but why don't you check out www.capri.net and see for yourself if it is your cup of tea? Some people like it some hate it, it is a personal decision like everything else.

I like Capri because it has a "scene." It is fun to sit in the Piazza Umberto with a drink and watch all the disparate people go by. You will see backpackers, millionaires, models, wannabes, families, American tourists, etc. Many sit at the tables in big, black Jackie O sunglasses with the look of ennui on their faces. Those waiting to take the funicular down to the marina, just throw their Louis Vuitton luggage on the ground and use it as a footstool. This typifies the relaxed nature of Capri.

Capri is also very beautiful, with the meld of azure-blue sky and indigo-colored water. If you take a walk to the Faraglioni Rocks (sp?) you will pass villas surrounded with trees and gardens. It is very romantic, especially if you hear someone playing Tosca or Le Nozze di Figaro while sitting by their pool.

My favorite ancecdote about Capri is a woman going into a jewelry store and asking if they had a battery for her watch (which had stopped. The owner replied, "Senora, on Capri we do not sell watch batteries. When the batteries go on our Patek Phillipes, we just toss them into the sea and buy another."

If you are thinking of Capri as a day trip from Sorrento or Naples, then I'd say forget it. It has been my experience that most people who hated Capri went only as a day trip. But most people who stayed there a night or two, loved it. Capri is a beautiful spot, but it is only "magical" at night. John G. has described much of the "charm" of Capri.
I went for a day trip and loved it! But it helped that I had been warned by Patrick. The scenery is great and if you can get away from the hoards of people (not so hard to do) you can have a very nice day there.

Patrick is right. You'll love Capri after you spent more than one night. I suggest the terrace of Punta Tragara, night, when the half moon kisses the Faraglioni.
