Cappadocia Turkey - hiking maps?
My husband and I are traveling to Turkey at the end of September and plan to spend two days in the Cappadocia area hiking the Ihlara Valley as well as the area around Rose & Pigeon Valleys. Does anyone know if there are hiking maps or guides online/available that would give us detailed information on those area?

We hiked the Ilhara and did not require a map. We only hiked for about an hour though (and had kids)
We followed path along creek, visited couple of caves, crossed over creek and visited another cave. It is flat, and the most strenuous part was climbing up to caves. There is also a nice place to eat there, with a carpeted platform built over the creek. |
Thanks for your feedback, Michel. This was helpful. We will look for the eating area you mentioned.

The information office at Gorome can give you a free crude map of the area. I'm sure the info office in other Cappadocia cities can give you the same/similar thing. For about 3-5 TL you can also buy the "Cappadocia & Goreme Maps Hiking Trails" from the Gorome info office.
You can also do the following: 1) google something like "Gorome Map" or "Gorome hiking", etc. and see what comes up. 2) Ask the owner of the hotel you'll be staying at for hiking tips/ help. 3) If you want to see hidden gems then you can try to arrange hiking tours with Middle Earth Travel or Walking Mehmet, etc. Enjoy your trip ! |
Thanks Axel2DP - great information. Will pursue all the avenues you mentioned.
Thanks again... and from what I have read so far and pictures I've seen of the area, I am sure we will be awestruck! |
Here's a walking map of Göreme
http://www.atamanhotel.com/walkingmap.html Pigeon Valley is bottom left and Rose (Güllü Dere) is middle right. |
We hiked part of the Rose Valley last October and it was unexpectedly hot and nothing was really marked.

We love to hike, and found the hiking in Cappadocia to be outstanding overall. FWIW, the crude hiking map photocopy we were given was of marginal value. But the specific direction we received from our hotel owner/operator in Goreme proved invaluable.
Our trip report might be useful to you: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...cappadocia.cfm Enjoy Turkey! |
I found the Pigeon easy to navigate and Love Valley easy enough. In fact I walked from Goreme to Uchisar to Cavusin and back to Goreme all in one day. I had to exit my attempt at walking the Rose valley because I found it not marked well and obviously that was a long day of walking!
For Ilhara, it is best to hire a driver to drop you at one end and pick you up at the other. Your hotel or the tourist office can arrange this. |
I posted the maps that Heritage Travel gave us on my Göreme page. See http://members.rennlist.org/imcarthur/goreme.htm
