Unless you're willing to pay more than double the price - why would you want to take a tour from istanbul? It'll be cheaper (and perhaps less geared for rich tourists which means less time spent in carpet shops, ceramic shops etc..) if you just join the many many tours in cappadocia itself.

We asked around for various day trips in cappadocia in istanbul and got the prices but when we got to goreme (in Cappadocia) and compared prices there, even after great negotiation, we realised that the prices in istanbul were still quite a bit higher (double).

The buses in turkey are as comfortable as busses go. ANd I dont' think a tour bus would be anymore comfortable than a normal public bus. What would be a nicer option would be to take the train - first class - to Ankara and from there take the bus - but if you're not used to travelling on your own, then perhaps this may seem daunting.

I must say though, turkey is an easy country to do things on your own - at the very most, taxis won't break your bank, if you are lost and needed to get someplace.

You can also fly from Istanbul to Cappadocia (Kayseri) and then I believe that you can catch a bus, we're renting a car so I'm not sure. The fares are higher if you book from the US through Turkish Airlines website (approx. $130 for a one way flight) but I found a local company (www.cappadociatours.com) in Cappadocia that reserved my flights for the Turkish price of $85 one way. Another option if you are short on time like we are. I reserved a room at the Kelebek hotel via email ($18 per night, $2 more for breakfast). I understand that there are lots of local guides once you get there.

If you want to do an escorted tour from Istanbul you might take a look at www.pachatours.com as they had a 2-3 day option for Cappadocia from Istanbul. I haven't used them so it's not a personal recommendation but one that I saw in Frommer's Budget Travel.

Dear Pounam,

I agree with Brownie about the carpet.
if you have concern about time you migh have problem. Becasue from Istanbul to Cappadocia (Nevsehir and small city around this city) takes around 12-13 hours by BUS. So you may lose many time. I recommend you fly to Kayseri (if you write me I can give you scheledue of Turkish Air Lines to Kayseri or Nevsehir) takes 50 minutes then 1 hour to Cappadocia, to ready to see. There are many travel agency take you around the Cappadocia their price very reasonable.
If you want more information write me

Have a nice trip

Sinan Akdeniz

We just got back from Turkey. Flew from Istanbul to Kayseri, were met by driver and stayed at Gamirasu cave hotel in a little village. One way transfer paid for by hotel. Our guide and driver were $80 for the full day, we hiked and saw few people! If you have little time I recommend Suleyman at cappadocia.tours.com he made all the arrangements- we were very happy w/ the package.
Cathie
