Cappadocia sites: Which best w/ private guide & which best done on own?

Hello,
We'll be based in Urgup and will have a private guide for one day and the second day we want to do on our own, with taxi transportation.
Which sites would be best reached and appreciated with the help of a guide and which should we do on our own with a taxi?
The third morning, we'll take the balloon ride and then leave in the afternoon.
Thanks so much for helping to clarify this.

The open air museum in Goreme which has the best decorated churches can definitely be done on one's own, and the same goes for the underground city.

The only place in Goreme that I thought warranted a private guide was Kaymakli, the underground city that I chose to visit. I would not have understood what I was seeing without his input.

Is Kaymaki really something that you enjoyed seeing? We're both a bit claustrophobic and don't like the idea of being underground for a long time?

I'm using the guide primarily for ease of traveling around and seeing places most efficiently...plus local knowledge.

The underground city is not for the claustrophobic.

I thought Kaymakli fascinating, but as Michael says, the underground cities may be uncomfortable for the claustrophobic. (Of course, beating a phobia generally requires exposing yourself to that which you fear, but I don't suppose you are going to Turkey for therapy! ) BTW, from what I heard/read beforehand, Kaymakli may be easier to tolerate than Derinkuyu (the other major underground city in the area) because Kaymakli is smaller, doesn't let you go as deep, and doesn't have any really long passages that aren't high enough to stand. But I don't know for sure, since I didn't see them both.

I was worried about claustrophobia too (couldn't tolerate having my head in an MRI and had to be taken out), but I was find in the underground city. We had a car (driving was quite easy) and hired a guide at then entrance. Our complaint was that he wanted to make more money off the next paying client so kept us rushing through quite quickly. The guide was very helpful with explaining what had gone on in various places in the city.

Everything else in Cappadocia we did on our own.

This was true of all tours when I visited the underground city. I went on my own and had to tuck myself into a wall to let several tours pass so that I could take the pictures of the tunnel and the stone wheel.
