oops, sorry about that. I posted it on another site...D005927. I'd like to pre-pay in the hopes I have a better chance of using it without question...

Is there a way to pre-pay on-line? Should I email the rental office or fax them my payment info to try to pre-pay? I'm sure they would ask me about the code if I faxed or emailed but at least I might find out more about it...

This is a two part question:

fishee: where did you put the discount code that you gave here. Because when I use it, the rental is not reduced very much as I can tell, so maybe I am placing it in the wrong box.

If you hit another car who pays for the other car? My insurance pays for our rental, but who is responsible for the other car that I hit?

If you hit another car, you will be held responsible.

Liability car insurance protects you against the cost of damage and injury that you cause to another in an automobile accident. It's actually made up of two different policies, bodily injury liability, and property damage liability.

Collision insurance coverage pays for damage caused to your vehicle in an automobile accident, when you are "at fault". A standard collision policy should pay for any repairs up to the fair market value of the car, but you can be held responsible for the replacement value of the rental car unless you purchase a little better coverage when you rent the car.

Robert2533. So are you saying that you purchase liability insurance along with full collision damage waiver when you rent a car in Europe so that if you cause damage to another car you are not responsible to pay for damages to that other vehicle?

Sher, it might not be necessary. You have to read the terms of the specific rental agreement. Often even the basic rental package includes some insurance, generally third party liability (both third party property and third party personal injury). This was the case for our car rentals in England, France, and Austria. In fact, in some countries (e.g. Canada) it is the law for car rental agencies to automatically provide such insurance. Note this is for liability to people and things outside one's own vehicle.

But as with everything else, read the fine print. Don't worry, if third party liability isn't included, they'll be more than happy to quote you the extra daily charge for it.

Thanks Sue. I think I forgot about the third party liability which is included.

I bought a travel insurance policy for other reasons but was reading the fine print (it includes car rental) and discovered that I do not qualify for the car rental because we did not book our travel through a travel agent. How about that!.

This next rental is all inclusive with no excess and includes liability so I am not even concerned with the insurance.

It just is nice to get all of these things straight in my head. Each rental is different.

late response to a question...

On the Avis website, I put the code in the AWD box and then clicked on corporate rate. Price for 4 days went from $173 to $117 (includes 16% tax) --at this price I can afford to buy every friggin insurance option Avis has. Please be warned, you might be asked for some kind of ID since I don't know what the code affiliaiton is. I'll be happy to report what happens with this code when I return.

Thanks for the code, fishee! I just reserved our Avis car for our trip to France in 2 weeks at a significant discount. Price went from $450 to $333 for a station wagon for 4 days. Hope it works when we get there!!

Wait! Someone on another site who is using a different AVIS code noted that on the last page of the reservation it says Liability was declined. We really need liability coverage since our Credit Cards only cover the rental car (Collision Damage Waiver) -- not another car that we might hit, etc.

So, i'm wondering if the significantly lower price is a function of the liability insurance fee being taken out. We wouldn't need liability in the U.S. since most of us already have car insurance but since we're renting internationally, it's something we should purchase separately.

I'm not being allowed to purchase liability insurance on the AVIS website -- really wierd, it won't let me check off that box. This is true whether I'm using a discount code or not, so I've contacted AVIS to ask about this. Is this happening to others? I'll report back when I hear from AVIS...

Here's AVIS' reply to my inquiry:

Thank you for contacting Avis.

Avis rates include, at no additional cost, compulsory car insurance and complementary public liability insurance and surety with unlimited guarantees, as well as insurance coverage for car damage by fire.
Not included in damage to the car due to collision, theft, acts of vandalism, or any theft of personal property, death or injury to the hirer or passengers traveling in the Avis car.

If we can be of further assistance, let us know.

Thank you for choosing Avis.
