I am trying to decide on which hotel to stay at in Rome and the more looking I do, the more confused I become. I have read many reviews on TripAdvisor, Venere, and here. All hotels either have mixed reviews based on room size, location, or friendliness of staff, or the reviews are slightly old.

I will be in Rome for 4 nights in May. I would like to spend 200-250Euro per night. I would also like to be central to most sites since this is my first time in Rome, although I don't mind walking.

My current thought are:
Albergo Cesari (240E)
Hotel Due Torri (160-250E)
Hotel Portoghesi (200E)
(above all near Piazza Navona area)
Daphne Inn (200E) - near Trevi fountain
Artemide hotel (244E) - on Via Nazionale
Hotel Morgana (195E) - near Termini

Please help.

well, if you've already read reviews here and you're asking again, you will probably get similar information. I know that the top 2 are often recommended here.

While no hotel is perfect, it helps to know what is an absolute "deal-breaker" for you. For me, for example, other than location, the hotel's got to be clean and quiet. I don't care quite as much if the staff is friendly or half-dead I just want it to be spotless with thick walls. If you tell us that "friendly staff" is the most important thing, then that might give us a better idea on which hotel to recommend. cheers! M

Like you, I definitely want a hotel that is clean and quiet. Location is also very important. And a friendly staff would just be a bonus. I guess my questions regarding specific hotels are these... How far is the walk from the Daphne Inn, Hotel Adriano, and Artemide Hotel to the major sites (Pantheon, Forum, Vatican)? Is Hotel Morgana in a safe area near the Termini?

I'd choose one of the first three. Cesari is practically next to the Pantheon; Due Torri and Portoghesi are north of Piazza Navona, the first on a very tiny street, the second on a somewhat larger street but still not noisy.

I'd avoid anything on Via Nazionale; it's a large, soulless street full of traffic. I'd also avoid anything near Termini; you'd have to take a bus almost anywhere. The same goes for either location of the Daphne Inn.

For restaurants and cafes, the first three are also preferable.

stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria in Trestevere..nice neighborhood scene....easy walking to Piazza Navona area.... 15 minute walk to vatican...hotel offers discount for cash. This is a converted monastery with large bathrooms per european standards. Nice breakfast ...courtyard full of orange trees! They have bikes for guests to use if you want. Great and helpful staff....free internet port in the breakfast building.

I've stayed at the due Torri and the Portoghesi. I prefer the Portoghesi because the compact rooms are finished just a little nicer, with more attractive fittings, furniture, nicer linens. The Due Torri staff is very friendly and helpful. However, the street can occasionaly seem a little dark and creepy, and I've smelled that outdoor toilet smell there in the summer.

I think the Portoghesi location is better, but it isn't much different. Just a brighter spot with lots more around it in terms of food, fun, etc. Although they are practically next to each other, the Due Torri is a darker spot where you wouldn't really go if you weren't going to your hotel.

Our room at the Due Torri was a little noisy, but it had a great balcony that we loved. This was noise from other top floor guests, not the street.

So: how much can you get a balcony room for at the DT? If it is anymore than the Portoghesi, I would pick the P. If it is a bit less, I would go with the balcony room at the DT.

I hope this has helped but it feels like I've added to the confusion!

We stayed at the Cesari over Christmas and really enjoyed it. Incredible location!
