Go south to Colmar for a couple of nights. Then head farther south into Switzerland's Berner Oberland for about 3 nights. Then train back to Frankfurt. This would make a very interesting sightseeing trip.

If you want to go to Italy, head southeast to Innsbruck and then south into Italy. This would be a little longer trip.

Fly to Ireland, Scotland or England - - on ryanair.com or buzzaway.com

Cheaper than a train to Italy, and less travel time.

Best wishes,

Rex

Anna,

This in response to your e-mail to me on June 27. Apparently you have decided to go to Italy anyhow. I am rather unclear what you mean by "I think i need the most help planning our trip in Venice"

Logistics? of how to get from Frankfurt to Venice to Milan back to Frankfurt? Lodging? how long to stay? Restaurants or things to see? Are you going to be driving?

Please clarify, and I will also e-mail this post back to you.

As you can see, I always prefer to answer questions here over private e-mails. Not a matter of objecting to e-mkails, but rather, I so, SO strongly support the concept: PUBLIC answers to PUBLICly asked questions help many people. Private e-mail answers help only one person. I also like the "cross-examination" and tangential lines of thought that often appear here.

I could answer a lot of questions by private e-mail. And answer a lot fewer publicly. But then how would people like you know that I exist, to answer your questions?
Anonyimouse Jun 29th, 2002 07:29 PM

Jeez Rex, what an over-inflated ego that you have. Everyone knows that you exist. However, if you disappeared for awhile and answered email privately INSTEAD OF ANNOUNCING THAT PEOPLE ACTUALLY WRITE TO YOU PRIVATELY, you might even be missed. No one here cares if you get email or not, so why not be courteous to the people that write to you privately and answer them privately.

Anna

Have you tried northern Germany also? It seems that when Germany is mentioned here it is always with reference to the middle/south. Northern Germany while the scenery is not as dramatic as the south (it is fairly flat!) can be so pretty. Hameln (of the pide piper fame), Celle, Muenster, a pretty university town surrounded by the "Munsterland" with a number of water castles, including one which is known as "petite Versailles" and is especially interesting to visit, Hamburg, Bremen and the north sea coastal area, Lubbecke. This area is only 3 hours from Frankfurt, and would a pleasant 6 day tour.
