cane e gatto - why is it so good
We will be leaving for Venice September 2nd; and will be in Venice (3 nights), Florence (2 ngihts), Siena (3 nigths), Pienza (2 nights) and Rome (4 nights).
First the airfare - then the hotel selections - then the rent car for Tuscany and a few tours with Luca... now the important details - food!
We love good food and wine.I would like to have a special dinner at each destination. Cane e Gatto sound interesting and I don't want to miss what many of you consider the best meal in Tuscany. 4 hours seems like a long dinner and we are not huge eaters....I guess I would like to hear what makes this place so great.
Thank you,
Linda

I have not been there - but cat in Italian is gatto; in spanish it is gato!
Anyway, I have read many of the prior comments - I was just looking for some more details - more personal thoughts as to why a 4 hour meal for $250/couple was so great.

Is the place you're thinking of the one called Antica Hostaria Cane e Gatto, located in Siena?
P.S.
cane e gatto= Italian
perro y gato = Spanish
It would be odd (though not impossible) for a restaurant to mix the two languages in its name, and if it really did, I'd wonder why.

We ate at Cane e Gato about 3 weeks ago and were not disappointed. First of all, unless you order more expensive wines, the cost will be about E140 per couple (we drank 2 bottles of the house Chianti ~ we had to drive about 30 miles back to Villa).
We thought the food was very good. Not the best we had in Italy but again, excellent. In our opinion (there were 6 of us), we thoroughtly enjoyed the experience because:
Excellent service and English (daughter of owner is waitress)
Wonderful food
Very small intimate restaurant
Family feel about restaurant (wife, husband and daughter are about it).
New course about every 45 minutes
No brainer, everybody eats the same courses
You will finish after little more than 3 hours. It takes a while to savor and pay bill.
We will go back again on our next trip to Siena. We were there for 3 weeks this Summer and stayed at villa the whole time.
Enjoy!

Thank you very much for your reply - this was the type of information I was looking for. We are staying right in Siena for 3 nights - so we'll enjoy a nice meal and wine, and walk back to the hotel.
Ciao!
Linda

catbert - thanks for the lead on this trip report.
artlover - thanks for all the suggestions for restaurants in Siena. I thoroughly enjoyed your entire trip. I hope to avoid the drunk Americans - but it happens!
Now I'm more confused about dining options!
Thanks again,
Linda
