Hello - What exactly is this? I have tried researching it but have gotten no where but fast. Thanks

As far as I know, it's a restaurant in Siena, Italy. It's a fixed, multi course meal which is really fabulous. I ate there and enjoyed it so much, I did it twice! There are a few posts here if you do a search, although it might be spelled Cane e Gatto. The translation is "cat and dog".

I also ate there two nights in a row in 2000. My husband's coworker, upon our advice, ate there 2 weeks ago and says it is still amazing, but with the current $/Euro exchange rate, the price is about $115/per person - very worth it. It is a glorious leisurely meal that lasts 4 hours. No menu, just Paulo and what ever his lovely missus feels like making in the kitchen. Fewer than 30 seats, every woman receives an orchid upon entering. Very romantic, inimate, unforgettable.

Are reservations necessary or do you just hope to get lucky?

Can also vouch for this marvelous little restaurant in Siena. We had 17 in our group so had the whole place to ourselves two years ago. Many courses and many bottles of wine later, we headed back to our villa, remarking that it was probably one of the best food experiences we'd ever had! But I would definitely make a reservation.

yes, it is dollars, I believe it includes wine. Hubby said friend said it was $230 per couple, presumably for food and wine. this exchange rate stinks!!

MarkY - il cane (dog), il gatto (cat) both are masculine in Italian. You get an "A."

The fixed course is one price, and then they add on whatever wine you order. There were only three people there one night and one was a chef who was ordering some expensive wine...so I just drank whatever they were opening. My meal that night came out to be about 120...and that was when the dollar was nearly one for one with the euro. I think the meal itself was only about 55-60 euro.

Our 6 course meal:


- Champagne to start
- A wonderful antipasta platter of buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes, proscuitto, spicy hard salami, quiche, and crostini.
- Tomato, cream, onion soup, topped with basil
- Papparedelle with marscapone cheese
- White wine
- Risotto with artichokes
- Red wine (2 different ones throughout the meal)
- Veal with mushrooms, potatoes, and rare cooked beef with a truffle sauce (to die for!)
- Vin Santo, which is a sweet dessert wine
- A dessert plate of tiramisu, fresh fruit, an ice cream/cake topped with fresh strawberries


Fabulous meal! (See journal for evening details) All of the women were presented by Papa with a lovely yellow orchid. As each dish was served, we were told what the ingredients were. Each plate was beautifully presentd and again always with a smile.

I gotta get back to Siena to take some friends to that restaurant...and then head to Positano to eat at the Dona Rosa again. Yum yum yum...

Monica, thanks for the blow-by-blow description of your feast!

Regarding the wine...did you order separately or is the wine pre-designated on the menu? Can one order different GLASSES of wine with subsequent courses, or were you referring to bottles?

As each dish was served, our host poured us a glass of wine that he chose for the dish. If I remember correctly, it wasn't just one glass. If someone wanted more, he would pour more.

I too have heard that the prices of the meal has gone way up and that wine is extra. I guess I was there at its best. $63USD at that time was well worth it.

My wife and I will be in Siena in 8 days and are considering making reservations at Cane E Gatto. I understand that this is a one seating restaurant. Does the restaurant start serving dinner at a certain time, or do we go ahead and make a reservation for whenever we want.

Also, what time is dinner generally served in Italy? I understand that Italians eat much later that here in the States.
