Canary Islands or Cyprus or ? for long term winter escape?
I'm seeking advice on where to winter in '06. I've looked at quite a bit, maybe too much, of info on the Internet. I'd like to rent an apartment for 10 weeks or so, near public transportation, restaurants, grocery stores, shops. Of course, it should have a warm climate, be safe for woman travelling solo, nice people, affordable, and have interesting sights to check out. Thanks for any advice!

I had to make this choice once for a week's break!
The weather is warmer in the Canaries, but for the rest you're talking about Paphos. I haven't been to the Canaries, but single women DO attract attention, but (not beiing very attractive myself) I certainly never felt threatened. |
I meant they attract attention in Cyprus. Sorry.

I would go for the Canaries. Warmer in Winter and you can meet people and enjoy your time there like many others who go for the winter. I met a couple in Lanzarote who were there for 2 months just to get away between jobs etc. Sounded like a nice idea to me! We met a guy living there who ran boat trips and met up with him again at a trade show in Dublin. You could rent a little car cheaply if you want more freedon.
Have a great time. |
I vote for Cyprus: There is great skiing on Mt. Olympus during winter season.

Thanks for the quick, interesting replies. Hmmm, cheap rental car, yes! Keep 'em coming, please.

I would also vote for the Canaries. It's a typical winter destination for ages and everything is there to live comfortably. I would prefer Tenerife or Gran Canaria as they have better temperatures than Lanzarote or Fuerteventura. Although G.C. can be very windy too!
