Can you use a carte orange for a trip to Versailles?
Hi all,
Im planning an excursion to Versailles during my trip to Paris later this month. Im trying to decide which metro pass to buy that will most fit my needs. The two of us will need a weekly pass and as I understand it, one of the passes will allow us to ride the RER so that we can visit Versailles. I believe its the Paris Visite card, but Im not sure if thats the way for us to go.
After doing my research, it appears that the carte orange makes the most sense for us, but I'm not sure if it will cover our Versailles fare or if I will have to buy a separate ticket all together? Can someone break it down so that we can figure whats the most cost effective way to do this? We do plan to use the metro extensively.
TIA!

Bypass the American in Paris website and go straight to the source, the Parisian Transportation Authority: www.ratp.fr (English language option). The normal carte orange which is sufficient for you to travel within the city limits of Paris covers 1-2 zones. Versailles will be in zone 4 or 5 and is considerably more. You would probably be better off buying separate tickets to Versailles. Remember: depending on how long you are going to be in Paris, a carte orange is a MONTHLY pass requiring a photo ID. If you are only in Paris for a few days, get the weekly pass and separate tickets to Versailles. You'll save money.

oh yeah, click on "guide to paris" and it'll take you to a table of links. the ones you want are: paris visite, rer, carte orange, and day trips (3rd to last on the second column)--which has the info on how to get to versailles!

Any kind of transportation pass has to be bought for a specific number of zones, so it's up to you as to whether you buy one that covers it or not. Versailles is in zone 4. Any transportation pass or unlimited daily use ticket (ie, Mobilis) that includes zone 4 will allow you to use the RER and go there. The Paris Visite is one of them, but you can't buy zone 4 on that pass, so you will have to get the zone 5.
If that's the only outside-Paris trip you make, I can tell you that there is no point in getting any pass beyond zone 2. I would suggest you go to official web sites, such as the Paris transportation site which fully explains things and is more accurate than second-hand information of uncertain date. www.ratp.fr is the official web site.
I can't tell you what you need without knowing where you plan to travel. It's very possible you won't need any pass at all if you stay within central Paris near the Seine, and could just use a carnet of tickets, and buy a RT one to Versailles. If you do buy a metro pass such as the Carte Orange, the weekly zone 1-2 coupon should be sufficient, and then buy a RT Versailles ticket alone. The ticket clerk will ask you how many zones if you ask to buy a Carte Orange for one week.
I think it is invariably true you could buy daily unlimited use tickets (Mobilis) and still spend less than the Paris Visite -- and that way you can buy a zone 1-4 on the day you go to Versailles.
