Can You Tell Me About the Sarlat Bike Path?
 

We are headed to Sarlat in a fcouple of weeks. Our 24 year old son is joining us. He is an avid runner but is recovering from a broken foot and will not be able to run while we are gone. He is worried about being able to get exercise and would like to do some biking. I'm a little worried about his going road biking as a lone rider.

I read in the Michelin guide that there is a bike path from Sarlat to Cazoules. Is the path paved? Is it used by bikers or by families out for a stroll? I'm just wondering whether he would be able to get what he considers to be a workout. Thanks for your help.

In terms of sufficient exercise, it depends on how your son defines that from cycling. Generally, these rail-trail bike paths are not for those looking to ride fast or do hills. They are shared with pedestrians and usually are flat, perhaps with some slightly rolling terrain.

I would google "bike shops Sarlat" and contact one of them to learn more about the opportunities in the area. Alot of these shops not only rent bikes, they provide information on suggested routes.

It will likely be crowded, though not so much in June as later in the summer. There are other bike paths in the region as well, though if you're going to be based in Sarlat, that's the obvious one.

The back roads are pretty empty, and he can kayak on the river for cross- training.

Thanks StCirq and Ackslander! I will pass on this info. Sounds like back roads may be the answer.

Thankfully, he will not be as incapacitated as StCirq was on her recent trip back to the Dordogne.

This piste cyclable is for the most part on former railroad tracks. There are some more interesting bits at the Cazoulles end which is near the river and may be less busy. I don't actually see why he couldn't share it with others, as long as he indicates that he is approaching . Amazes me how few people make any warning noise/announcement. I'd recommend that he try it.

Thanks Carlux. I'll have him check it out and see what he thinks. I know it would be fine for me, but I am worried he will not feel like he can get his heart rate up as a substitute for running if it is busy. I'll be sure to teach him how to say "on your left" in French. :)
