Can you see Bruges in four hours??? Well...yes, if you like touring at warp speed! If this is your only chance to see Bruges, go for it. However, be prepared, you won't want to get back on that train four hours later to go back to Paris! For four hours, I would recommend a canal tour (takes about one hour or less, as long as there are no waiting lines), grab a sandwich at one of the many delis/sandwich shops and eat near a canal (faster than a restaurant), climb the steps of the belfry for a great view and a close up look at all those bells, maybe visit ONE museum (or tour the town hall), then walk back to the train station and on your way, buy a BIG box of Leonidas chocolates for your trip back to Paris. On the return train ride, kick yourself for not staying longer, but console yourself with the chocolates.

Better yet, try to stay overnight at least one night and do all of the above, plus rent a bike and see more of the town, or ride along the canal out to the town of Damme (bike tour maps availabe at the tourist information office near the Burg). See a few more museums and go see the women demonstrating bobbin lace making near the Jerusalem Church - buy your lace there, or at a tiny store around the corner (can't remember the name - sorry!). Just walk, walk, walk all around the town - absolutely charming! I hope to go back soon myself! I hope this helps.
Hi, several years ago while making a train conncection in Brugges, we had a couple hours til next train going into France because the French trains were on strike or a slowdown or something. Anyway, we talked to a taxi driver right outside the station and asked how much to show us the town for an hour or so. I don't remember what it was, but he also spoke English well, and we had a great tour. That was our first time there, and it whetted our appetite to go back. So we've been back twice, it's a neat little town. Enjoy what you can, and you'll want to go back too.

We recently returned to Brugge for a second visit and are planning a third visit in May of '99. While on our trip this year to Brugge we did just the reverse, a day trip to Paris. The only way I would recommend it is if you can take the "bullet" train (Thalys). I believe the fare was about $70 roundtrip each. We left Brugge about 7:00 a.m., arriving in Brussels about 8:00 - train left Brussels for Paris at 8:30 a.m. arriving in Paris at 10:00 a.m. - spent 9 hours in Paris, departing for Brussels approx. 7:30 p.m. arriving back to Brugge at 10:00 p.m. - full day but well worth it. You MUST have reservations on the Thalys.
