In the Firenze train station we watched a team of pickpockets work the lines of travelers. There were alot of them, from what looked like an extended family and they would bring their loot to the matriarch who was pushing a luggage cart around.
We had missed one train (long story involving no seat reservations), and had about an hour to watch the pickpocket group work. The police just turned the other way, so we didn't get involved either.

Don't worry, it is probably the exception, not the rule. Maybe the handsome stranger will be there for you, you never know.

Grin, I've never encountered any pick pocketing problems in Europe. However, I do wear a money belt with all my essentials in it when I'm in train stations or en route city to city. I just have more peace of mind that way.

Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine.

That's why my 6'3" fireman brother comes along. He lifts. Actually my suitcase weighs about 25 lbs. loaded and I can lift it.
