Did you try contacting anyone listed here:
http://www.great-kingshill.co.uk/

Or perhaps a real estate agent?

Better yet, try www.landregistry.gov.uk It allows you to do a property search but you can do it by selecting each house in Great Kingshill and see what address or name it is - although this might be a repeat of the database that flanneruk looked in. If your mom has any idea of what it was near (an intersection, etc.) that might help as well!

Good luck - I love a great mystery!

Ackislander: AFAIK dependents didn't need UK drivers licenses, and could continue using just their Stateside license, IF they left the country at least once a year. Even if only a weekend across the Channel. If they didn't get their passports stamped proving so, they would need to pass a UK driving test and get a license. Those tests scared the bejeezus out of some so they made sure to go away

We didn't go to the continent. My parents were Anglophiles, and heaven was all around them.

Call me the young crazy one, but have you tried Twitter? You could tweet @ some Great Kingshill clubs. We Brits love a mystery, especially a romantic/ historical one. Good luck!

Perhaps it was different in the US at the time, but back in 1940's England virtually nobody had a private car - so the chances of there being any driving licence records out there are slim indeed.

I agree with Gordon_R about few of the English had cars in the 1940's but American military personnel did. In our first rented place, we were the only people in the street with a car. We had to keep it in a yard behind the pub because there was no overnight parking on the street. Later we moved to a house in a new estate, and I would guess about a third of people did.

But if they are looking for an American, auto or driving licenses may be a useful datapoint.

I doubt very much if aliens registration records or driving licence records for individuals would be publicly available in the UK, certainly not for anyone likely to be alive. Even if they were, you still wouldn't get much further than the same address which is the original problem.

I don't know how big Great Whatsit is, but what about trying to use Google Streetview to look for the house?

Have you tried posting on the forum at http://www.great-kingshill.co.uk/ ? it's such a tiny place, there must be someone who knew someone. Six degrees of separation and all.

And

email the local paper! I would be very surprised if they didn't pick it up [email protected]

By judicious use of Google, I discover there was an English Setter breeder called Barnes not a million miles away from Great Kingshill in the early 1960s who had a dog with Sunglint in the name. If you are REALLY stuck, it might be worth trying to track her down.

And THIS is why these forums are so fabulous!

I have no idea how to go about trying to find if Sunglint still exists or where it is located. I Googled it, but no luck. It would be wonderful if my brother and I could find this home and take photos for our mom, who is now 90 years old. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks so very much!

Welcome to Fodors rutty1970. Unfortunately Krinklebee almost certainly will not see your post. She only posted three times and hasn't visited the forums in nine years.

Amazing, after all this time. I wonder if their trip came off and how it went.

I'd love to know if Krinklebee found the house... I spent the summer of 1963 very nearby in Hazlemere. It's a beautiful area.

Sunglint

Hi rutty1970! I just today (Nov 10, 2022) saw your post. I just happened to Google Sunglint again and found your post. I hope this reply reaches you. I would love to connect further with you but I’m not sure how to do that. Let me know if you get this and then we can figure out a way to connect. Thank you! Krinklebee
