Can you get to Dachau from Munich airport?
 

I just want to know if I can get a train at the
airport to Dachau or must I get a connection in Munich? Thanks.

Get a S-Bahn S1 at the airport to Ost-Bahnhof and change to S-Bahn S2 to Dachau. Takes about one hour.

I think we can nail down your connections with a little more precision.

From the Airport S bahn station, take the S1 line to München-Laim. When you leave the airport, you will be traveling in the direction of München Ost.

At the station named München-Laim, change to the S2 line, direction Dachau Bahnhof.

You should have an easy connection at München-Laim because S1 arrives on Gleis 2 and S2 leaves from Gleis 1.

The trip takes 58 minutes from the airport to the Dachau train station, according to the schedule.

You will have about 7 minutes between trains on most schedules when you change S-Bahn trains at München-Laim.
Please note, you do not go all the way to München Ost station.

As mentioned above, you'll need to transfer at Laim from the S1 to the S2. Just beware that Laim is a "weird" station. IIRC track 1 and track 2 are not on the same platform. Just pay attention when you get there.

OK..since we are being so "precise" here let's tell the original poster the REST of the story. Getting to the suburb of Dachau is not synonomyous with getting to the concentration camp site. After you get off the train go outside the station and look for the busstop...it is plainly marked. It is a short ride to the concentration camp site and busses run frequently. The bus route number is 726 as I recall but that may have changed.

Your answer could be more precise by telling cheryl whicn side of the street to stand on and how much the fare was.

Also, mount the front of the bus or the rear? So even your precision is limited.

What sarcasm? I LOVE it when people are as precise as possible. Newcomers to a place are likely to make mistakes. The more information, the less liklihood of a travel nightmare. Precision in directions is the height of consideration.

Please don't take offense Bob but I appreciate precision. As a newcomer to train travel in Europe the thought of having to change trains after a long sleepless flight doesn't appeal to me...so precise directions will help. I'm actually staying the night...not just going to the camp.

And by the way, the bus stop is in the middle of a "plaza" area so you don't have to stand on either "side of a street"; you enter from the front where you pay the driver; last time I think the fare was about 1 Euro. Any other questions?

I think the busses in Dachau are part of the Verkehrsverbund (transport authority), so that you can use the same zone ticket that you used on the S-Bahn.

Dachau is actually not a suburb of Munich in the "American" sense, but a small city in its own right. It even is about 350 years older than Munich.

Sorry Curious, not correct. All buses in Dachau are in the same fare system as the rest of Munich transit, so that if you have a day-pass or other valid ticket, you do NOT need any additional tickets for the bus.

My ticket didn't work coming off the S-Bahn onto the bus.

If you had a DB railpass or ticket that you used on the S-Bahn, then it wouldn't be valid on the bus. But an MVV ticket should be valid for both.
