Can you do Germany without a tour - and speaking no German?

Rufus, I appreciated many of your posts planning our trip, btw. I actually thought the spiral (which I had! overkill traveler than I can be) was slightly more detailed, I just found it easier to fold the other maps to sections of the country I needed. also, we pretty much stayed in Bavaria so I only needed two individual maps, and the spiral was a lot more map than we ended up needing.
I did give the spiral to a European friend of mine. It's easier for her to get over to Switzerland and Germany than me here in NY.
BTW, sppunk, if you need city maps, you can request them from the websites of the individual towns for free. This helped me in Garmisch, Salzburg, and Munich. Or usually a TI office will have one, sometimes even your hotel.
