Can we get to Crail?
 

Mid-September we're looking at using public transportation to visit Stirling, Culross, Perth and finally Edinburgh. Haven't discovered an efficient way to include Crail for a day trip or overnight from any on these locations unless we add a night at St. Andrews. What should we try?

Getting around the coastal fishing villages w/o a car is pretty difficult.

Anstruther has much more bus service but it is still not an easy place to get to w/o a car. While public transport is much better in the UK than in most of the States - it is still awfully time consuming to get to out of the way places.

Try the door-to-door journey planner on www.transportdirect.info. Quite a few buses seem to go through Crail, with connections from Edinburgh by train.

Thanks, Janis and Geoff for the great links. It's great to hear from two of the real authorities! From the timetables it seems possible to get to Crail in two hours or so from Glascow, Stirling, Perth or Edinburgh, although depending on only five minutes for coach transfers might require a lot of optimism. I think that we will wait until we get to the area and test the weather, etc., before locking in that excursion. Any recommendations for great seafood other than going straight to the source?

Without a doubt - the Cellar in Anstruther. One of the best meals you'll have in Scotland.

There is also a really good fish & chips place in Anstruther but can't remember the name -- maybe just the "Anstruther fish bar"

Janis, it is the Anstruther Fish Bar--voted best in Scotland (and second-best in the UK). Go early or queue up for 30-40 minutes. It is worth it!!

I think that's probably too hard without a car. If you base yourself on the East Neuk Coast, you could walk between the villages.
