So you may end up with poor rate of exchange from US$ (or whatever your base currency) to euro. Why don't you stop at the first ATM after crossing the border (no stopping needed as both in Schengen area) and withdraw euro from an Italian ATM?

We withdrew money from ATMs in Switzerland last month and were never offered a choice of currency. Perhaps some ATMs offer this but certainly not all. But of course if you go into a bank and do an over the counter transaction, they'll issue a range of currencies.

Just two banks that I checked:
The Zürcher Kantonalbank has about 100 ATMs ("Bancomats") all over town where you can withdraw Euros. See https://www.zkb.ch/de/ks/psc/filiale...automaten.html (in German only)
Credit Suisse also has ATMs with Euros.
