Can someoone clue me in??
 

It has been a couple years since I've gone overseas but I've been checking out air lately and am shocked.

Travelocity and others say the fare is 380rt from my city which usually always meant about 480 - I always use to pay about 100 taxes, fees, etc.

NOW those taxes, fees etc are running about 200 a ticket??

I've paid the 9/11 fees before and they never came to that much.

If you haven't noticed, fuel costs have sky rocketed.....

Perhaps if you gave more specifics as to exactly what airlines and cities you are talking about, someone could comment about your $200 fees.

Some taxes and fees have gone up a little, and I think I've seen some locations where they were now around $125, but I've never seen $200 myself. The places I go, they are still around $80-100 per RT ticket. Maybe the place you are checking is putting something in the taxes and fees that is really an addon to the fare. I just checked Air France roundtrip for November from Wash DC/Paris, and the base fare was $484 and the total taxes and fees only $86, so the final price was $570 RT.

I've heard (have no direct experience though) that British Ailines has really high taxes/fees, but they are the only one I heard that about. My ticket to from Dallas to Paris on AA included right at $100 in fees.

I was checking fares from Baltimore to Amsterdam and Frankfurt yesterday. Taxes and fees were around $100 per ticket with total just under $500 per ticket round trip. Open jaw flying into Amsterdam and back from Nuernberg was just over $500 per ticket including taxes/fees.

In the Sunday paper Tom Parson's had an article that addresses your question. Of course Sandi gave you the answer above.

'Where there were no fuel surcharges a year ago, we're now seeing surcharges as high as $110 round trip on some routes. Late last September, carriers began adding a small fuel surcharge on many international routes, and the rates have continued to creep up. The fees currently charged could easily increase, as fuel costs just went up because of Hurricane Katrina. Don't be surprised to see fuel surcharges of $140 or more in the coming months.'

That is interesting. The fees I did notice were on BA however I thought an airline or two matched that on several routes.
I understand fuel costs have gone up but typically Sandinut that is included in the fare.
Betty I appreciate the clarification on the "surcharges".

I've never known the fuel costs were factored in to the fare, I've always heard referred to as a fuel surcharge so I assumed it was part of the "fees" you're referring to.
