Can someone help me identify these monuments in Istanbul?

Hi all,
I need some help in identifying some monuments in Istanbul. The link below will take you to 4 photographs posted on shutterfly. Hopefully the link works. Please let me know if it doesn't.

Pic 1: A view of two mosques, taken from Top Kapi.
Pic 2: A night view of a mosque, taken from Galata Tower. This mosque can also be easily seen from the Galata Bridge. There is a possibility that this mosque is the same one as the one on the right in Pic 1.
Pic 3: This picture was taken on a Bosphorous cruise. What is this monument?
Pic 4: This one too was taken on a Bosphorous cruise; does anyone know what it is?

Thank you all in advance.

#2 looks like Sulieman Camii.

#4 looks like Ciragan Kempinski.

#3 is too blurry.

#1 looks like Sulieman Camii and Yeni Camii.

I don't think #4 is Ciragan Palace.

It is so hard to see your photos, they are so small and blurry.

To see the photos in larger format:

Click on "view album"
Click on "detail view"

If you click on "play slideshow" you can see the photos full screen. They didn't look blurry to me.

Thin - too many martinis so early in the morning! :)

3rd photo down: "exquisite summer palace" Not much help; maybe it has no name!
nice photos

Pepper_von_snoot Feb 12th, 2014 06:18 AM

Thanks for the suggestion about the "detail view."

I now think #4 may be the Kucuksu Palas.

#3 is Fortress of Europe.

#2 now looks like Yeni Camii.

I was in Istanbul in July, 2005.

Pics 1 & 2 are definitely the same place. Look at the surroundings and they are the same.

I think #3 is the Seven Towers or maybe the Rumeli Fortress. I thought #4 was the The Dolmabahçe Palace, but I'm not certain.

Pepper_von_snoot Feb 12th, 2014 06:55 AM

Rumelihisari=Fortress of Europe.

#4 is definitely Kucuksu Palas.

There are photos on Trip Advisor.

Pepper_van_snoot: Thanks for your help.

Pic #2 is definitely not Yeni Camii. The mosque in this pic is on the right side of the Galata bridge as you walk from Beyoglu to Eminonu; and further inland. While the Yeni Camii is slightly to the left of Galata Bridge and much much closer to the water. I was in Istanbul in November last year so its all still quite fresh in my mind. I"m thinking it could be the Sulemaniye Camii.

On the link that Sylvia3 provided, I found a picture very similar to my pic #3 and it was labelled Rumela Fortress which you confirmed too.

adrienne:
Thanks for pointing Thin in the right direction :)

wanderlust36 Feb 12th, 2014 07:56 AM

sylvia3:
Thanks for the link. You're right, the third pic on that page is certainly the same monument in my pic#4.

The first pic on your link, identified as Rumeli Fortress is very similar to my pic #3 and Pepper_von_snoot has confirmed it so I guess that takes care of Pic #3.

Assuming that your "nice photos" comment was about my pics and not the ones on your link, thanks a lot :). I've taken a lot of pictures on my visit to Turkey and am in the process of organizing them. When I'm done, maybe I'll post a link here for all to access them. I'm uncertain only because its a lot of pics like around 1200 or so.

wanderlust36 Feb 12th, 2014 08:02 AM

Rubicund: Thanks for your response.

Do you know the names of the mosques in Pics 1 and 2 ?

Pic #3 is confirmed to be Rumela Fortress based on the above posts.

Pic #4 is definitely not Dolmabahce Palace. I have many pictures of the palace so I feel quite sure about that. Plus, this pic was taken much further along the Bosphorous.

otherchelebi Feb 12th, 2014 09:39 AM

Thin ıs correct about Pic. 4 it is Kucuksu Summer Chalet (or palace)

Number 2 is Suleymaniye Mosque, one of the major works of the master architect Sinan.

Pepper_von_snoot Feb 12th, 2014 01:30 PM

Thanks, otherchelebi.

mscleo Feb 12th, 2014 07:50 PM

1&2 - The mosque of Suleyman the Magnificent.

3 - Rumeli Fortress

4 - Kucuksu Palace

Istanbul is a beautiful place. I can't wait to visit it again.

kja Feb 12th, 2014 09:16 PM

As other said, #2 is Suleymaniye Mosque, and I also think, as did mscleo, that the mosque to the left of picture #1 is also Suleymaniye -- the "tell" is the set of "chimneys" in front (i.e., on the side toward the Golden Horn).

From the map in my Rough Guide and a google search, I think the mosque to the right in #1 might be Fatih Camli, but that's really just a guess based on location and the features I could see on a relatively quick comparison.

wanderlust36 Feb 13th, 2014 05:02 AM

Thanks a lot folks. Based on your posts I am clear on pics 2,3, and 4.

In Pic 1 however there are two mosques. It appears that the one on the left is Sulemaniye Mosque but if anyone else can confirm, that would be great.

The second mosque ie the one on the right hasn't yet been identified "beyond reasonable doubt" :) - any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

thank you all so much

Pepper_von_snoot Feb 14th, 2014 07:35 PM

Chimneys?

Those are minarets.

Thin

kja Feb 14th, 2014 07:48 PM

No, Thin, not the minarets -- the patch of "chimneys" below the wall of the main grounds facing the Golden Horn, toward the Topkapi Palace. I think the chimneys one can see in these two photos were for the mosque's hamam, rather than it's soup kitchens, but I'm not positive about that.

kja Feb 14th, 2014 07:51 PM

(Although I would add that the placement of the minarets is also a bit of a give-away...."

Pepper_von_snoot Feb 14th, 2014 08:05 PM

Oh, so sorry.

From looking at a map and the position of the mosque in photo #1, if the mosque in the foreground is Sulieman Camii then the mosque in the background has to be Fatih Camii.

I don't see how it could be anything else.

Thin

kja Feb 14th, 2014 08:13 PM

Yes, that's what I thought, but I'm no expert, and I've certainly dealt with mistaken maps before! Maybe otherchelebi will weigh in on that mosque to the left of photo # 1.

kja Feb 14th, 2014 08:21 PM

oops -- I meant the mosque to the RIGHT of photo # 1, the one the is "left" for unambiguous identification. ;-)

otherchelebi Feb 15th, 2014 12:48 AM

You're leadıng me on to go and have a look.

However, ı am at Iznik now and will be back in Istanbul Tuesday for my first graduate seminar of the Spring semester and can do that only at that time. Will report.

wanderlust36 Feb 15th, 2014 04:46 AM

kja, Thin and otherchelebi,

Thanks so much for your active interest in sorting this out. I appreciate your posts.

Is Fatih Mosque the one on Divan Yolu Caddesi very close to the Sultahmet Tram station? If it is then I doubt that the mosque on the right in Pic #1 is Fatih Mosque. Fatih Mosque appeared smaller to me than the one we're trying to identify.

Could it be Rustem Pasha?

I'm going to post another pic of the view from Galata Tower which may help to get a sense of the area south of Golden Horn. Please have a look when you can, using the link in the first post.

wanderlust36 Feb 15th, 2014 05:09 AM

Update: Sorry, the link in the first post will not show you the newly added pics.

Janetd5 Feb 15th, 2014 06:16 AM

I'm going to take a try at the photos!

#1 - Suleymaniye Mosque to the left, Sehzade (aka Prince's) Mosque to the right;
#2 - Suleymaniye Mosque;
#3 - Rumelian Castle/fortress; and
#4 - Beylerbeyi Palace

Janetd5 Feb 15th, 2014 06:20 AM

Oops - no - #4 Kucuksu Palace!

Pepper_von_snoot Feb 15th, 2014 06:36 AM

Thanks Otherchelebi.

Keith and I will wave at Fetullah Gulen for you when we see him at the Olive Garden restaurant.

He lives near us.
