can lira still be converted to euros?
 

i am going to italy this month and i still have some old itlaian lira. can it still be converted to euros? if so, do you know the procedure, i.e. do you have to take it to a certain bank, etc.

It can still be exchanged at a national Bank of Italy.

Some shops in Europe still accept the old national currencies, as they would like to generate some extra business (they bring it for you to the national bank). But the chance is very small to find such a shop.

Last May, I found about 30,000 lire that I'd stashed away, and they converted it to US dollars for me at a Thomas Cook Currency Exchange booth in the Philadelphia International Airport.

Is it safe to walk around Philadelphia airport with that much cash?

I think it came to around $16 or $17, I barely made it out of there alive. ;)

I have to admit I kinda miss lira. It felt so lavish my first time there, peeling off all the bills to pay 365,000 lira for about $200 worth of jewelry. :)

I agree dgkp, I miss dividing by 7 or whatever to see how many Francs I was spending..I did so love a bargain when traveling~

I'd keep it! or at least some of it. I have a ton of currency from all over, I'm going to make a framed collage one day to hang up (actual design TBD).

I have great nostalgia for (hopefully) the only restaurant tab I ever encountered in "seven figures" - - about 1,400,000 lire (for fourteen people - - about $50 a person) in 1998, at Antico Martini.
