good luck to your friend, tat..and happy new year everyone..
fyi, nowadays the day you pass your exam, they swear you in..at the immigration office...at least in nj they do. you can apply for a passport that same day or the next. the ins actually advises you to do it asap.

Just want to give this thread the end.
My friend used http://www.travelvisaexpress.com
paid somewhat $340.00 and RECEIVED (I still can't believe it) her passport in
3 weeks. We mailed it out on 10th of January and she got it back on Feb,6.
We were so affraid of the scam, but here it is. I hope it'll help to someone else. It does look like a passport, but green.

Absolutely, you cannot travel to the EU on a green card. An US permanent resident must have a visa to enter; visa must be issued by the country you arrive in. If flying directly to France, then a French visa. If traveling to England to change planes to France, then a British visa. A visa must be affixed to something and the only document issued by the USA is called a "Reentry Permit". The current issuance time for this document is 16 months! My husband is officially "stateless" and therefore no possible passport from any country. His application was received on 1/31/03 and we're still waiting. The website is the Dept of Homeland Security, Division of Citizenship and Immigration (no more INS) www.ucis.gov
