Can anyone recommend a Beer Garden in Munich
I'm going to be in Munich for three nights in the middle of August and really want to check out some of the better Beer Gardens?
Certainly the most stylish of Munich beer halls is the Augustiner Restaurant on Neuhauser Straße with a small beer garden:
http://www.augustiner-restaurant.com/ A typical garden-style Biergarten (which is off the city center) is the Franziskanergarten. http://www.franziskanergarten.de/ You may also choose Aumeister within the Englischer Garten (Munich's splendid city park): http://www.aumeister.de/ |
Order yourself a "radler" if the weather is hot -- it's a lemon-flavored beer; I think the Brits call it a shandy. Wonderful, less alcoholic, less caloric.
I would second the English Garten. I just returned from Munich and we took a bike ride through the massive park and stopped for lunch and a litre at the Pagoda.
Huh? Hofbrauhaus is the biggest tourist destination in Muncih. Touristic yes but a great time. Big Beergarden. Other are listed are good I also like Donsil right off the main square.
I would ditto traveller1959. All 3 are very nice, and we especially liked the Englischer Garten. Friends of ours who are natives of Munich (and still live there) took us there on our last visit and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Beautiful park. For what it's worth, they don't particularly care for Hofbrauhaus - too many tourists. We've been there as well and it's certainly entertaining, but not as nice (or as much fun in our opinion) as the others that have been mentioned.

There are a few beer gardens within the Englischer Garten. Along with the Pagoda, there's also the See Haus right on the lake.
If it's a nice sunny day, watch out for all the naked sunbathers in the Englischer Garten. :-) ((b)) |
We only went to Hofbrau Haus and Augustiner last week, but I recommend both just because they are so famous!
While not exactly a beer hall, but Viktualienmarkt is an outdoor market place near the city centre that has many stalls serving great foods (SAUSAGES of all sizez and colors!) and good beer selections. Seats at communal tables are almost always available.
Oh, yeah, I forgot about the market. That place is fabulous! We had a delicious fruit smoothie drink there.
See Haus on the lake in the English Garten is gorgeous on a sunny day.
Another vote for the Viktualienmarkt. With three nights, I would go there (perhaps on the day you sightsee in the city center) and the Englischer Garten.
Budman - Here's hoping for a sunny day in Munich ;)

If you invision sitting under the chesnut trees you should visit one of several in Englisher Garten. If it is oompah bands and foamy camaradie (sp) then drop by the Hofbrau Haus. For a nice Bavarian dinner with great been go to the Augustiner or the Andechs am Dom near the Frauenkirche.
The Hirshgarten, our favorite!
Since this is a 2006 post, I think the op has come and gone.
