Can alcohol be carried in plastic?

Hello everyone,

I am travelling with a tour group later this year and want to take advantage of duty free spirits. The trouble is that I will be living out of a suitcase on and off a bus for most of the time and I don't want to keep the precious stuff in the breakable glass bottles.

If I decant it into plastic bottles, will it 'go off' or change in any way?

Hope someone can help an ignorant traveller.
Thanks heaps.

It certainly won't do it any good, unless it's really swill and then what would be the point in buying duty free anyway? I would also think you would be asking for trouble at customs.

Some duty free spirits are actually sold in a type of plastic bottle.I remember seeing Scotch and Gin in plastic bottles at Gatwick duty free earlier this year. Also some airlines sell duty free in simular bottles, no doubt to cut down on weight.

Plastic will absolutely affect the taste in a bad way, and can do so in a matter of hours (certainly overnight).

I have many times bought gin and wodka and rum in plastic bottles before trekking trips in the Himalayas. No problems with the quality of the booze, even after 3 weeks.

I just checked the liquor cabinet and found a fifth of Smirnoff vodka in a plastic container.

Hmm. Maybe it depends on the type of plastic then.

Yeah, it depends on the type of plastic. (There are MANY types of plastic.)Some booze does come in plastic, but where are ya going to find a suitable plastic bottle to pour into? I'd say try to buy your spirits already in plastic, but don't try transferring from one bottle to another.
