Camping in the Lake District, Cumbria

Hi.

I intend to spend a few nights camping somewhere in the Lake District and I was wondering whether somebody could give me some advice on where abouts to go...

Also, while looking for campsites online I find that it is the big, family-orientated campsites that are most commonly advertised online. Can anyone suggest anywhere that is just a simple field (like one offered out to campers by a farmer) where I could stay? I don't really need any facilities I just want somewhere cheap to pitch my tent without breaking the law!

Thanks very much,

Clare

If you google up the Camping & Caravaning Club, they have a special list of smallsites which are usually quite basic, and are restricted to only 5 caravans plus some tents. They are also all for tourers, no permanent mobile homes or holiday park stuff. Lots of these are basically farmers fields, or behind a pub, or similar. You need to search for Cumbria 'Certified Sites'.

Hi Clare, I recommend Stonethwaite campsite in Borrowdale. You can find more info here:

Hope for sun, but be well-prepared for lots of rain.
